Ashkenazi Jew: Jew from Northern Europe
Sephardic Jew: Jew from Spain and Mediterranean Area.

Ashkenazim and Sephardim are a bit different, such as how they vary in the Kashrut of Kitniyot (Lentils, chick peas and related foods) on Passover.

I am an Ashkenazi Jew because my family is from Romania and Russia. I just learned an interesting fact about Ashkenazi Judasim:
FireMiko-Kagomechan Here's how it is..... Apparently, Ashkenazi Jews(aka Eastern European Jews) are of not Semitic Descent but are actually Asian converts from generations ago. We came from a people called the Khazars who had a kingdom near Turkey during the 12th century, Khazaria was mostly made up of people from the XiongNu Clan which were a mixed Chinese/Mongolian clan which Gengis Khan came from I think. Anyways the Khazar's original religion was Buddhism or Shamanism, or one of those spiritual religions, until one day the King of Khazaria decided he should convert his people to a new religion. And lo and behold he chooses Judaism, and converts his entire kingdom to Judaism. After the demise of the Mongol Empire, which Khazaria was a outpost of, these newly converted "Jews" spread throughout Eastern Europe and Russia, and became known as Ashkenazi Jews, which is what I am. Therefore, I have as much claim to Asian Pride as any "pure" Asian does. LOL, I guess this explains why Eastern European Jews love Chinese food so much XDD. Why are you posting anti-Semitic myths? How is it that not a single Ashkenazi Jews looks like a Mongol if they're supposedly descended from them? Why do Ashkenazi Jews share genetic links to Sephardi Jews and Middle Easterners?
The Khazar "theory" (if you can even call it that) has been thoroughly disproven. The only people who still propagate it are Neo-Nazis and their Muslim allies.

Fact - A few years ago scientists found out that male Cohanim from both Ashkenaz and Sephard has a unique gene on the Y chromosome. It is a proof that we are linked geneticlly, since according tothe jewish tredition all of the Cohanim are descendants from Ahron (Moses brother), and the Y chromosome is somthing that passes along from father to son.

Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrachim, Teimanim, Beta Yisrael (Ethiopian Jews), and the Jews of India ALL share the Kohein gene in over 90% of those claiming Kohein descent (and by the way, the descendants of Pinchas also were incorporated into the priestly caste, which may actually account for the last small percentage; you could look it up). The others share other genetic traits common to those of Jewish descent.
There may be some truth to the conversion of the Khazars, but even if so, they are not -- by far -- the totality, the majority, or even a substantial minority of the Jews of Ashkenazi descent.

Ashkenazi Jews make up 80% of the world's Jews, apparently, but we weren't nearly so numerous a thousand years ago, when we made up less than 5%. We are called Ashkenazi as Germany was refered to as Ashekanz in Hebrew at the time. We are more an ethnic group than part of Judaism, as someone can be Ashkenazi if they have an Ashkenazi father or mother, whereas they can only be strictly Jewish by orthodox standards if their mother is Jewish. We are, as a whole, famous for being vulnerable to genetic illnesses... Great.

Not likely, Pinchas was the son of Aharon Hm, maybe I'm thinking of someone else. Was it Korach? Now I've forgotten, and that won't do. I'll go have another look. But I do know that there was a man whose zeal for Torah was so fierce and so complete that Hashem decreed that he and his descendants would share the priestly heritage, though they were not descendants of Aharon.

Give Sephardic Jews some cred, Bob Dylan's dad was Sephardi! Oh yeah, yall will love this one: Sean Paul (Legalize it, time to recognize it) also had a Sephardic father. And who doesn't love a good wrap dress? Diane von Furstenberg was Greek Sephardic.
Speaking of fashion designers, that's another thing we can add to the list of things Jews pwn at. Just to add a few names to Behatz's list: Kenneth Cole, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Issac Mizrachi, Michael Kors, and Donna Karen are all very celebrated designers. Even though a majority of their clothes are far from tzniut, most of them have or had some phenomenal talent.

You are talking about Pinchas but he was not made a Kohen in the start since he was already born before Aharon became Kohen. Only after he shown a freat divotion to G-D by taking Hashem's revange on the leader of the Shimon tribe (he slept with a Goia infront of the entire people to question Moses authorety) he was made a Kohen (According some of the Torah interpreters).
