Glamour magazine has an article calling for more openess on the subject of abortion:

Abortion: The Serious Health Decision Women Aren’t Talking About Until Now
Quote:
How could it be, when abortion inspires culture-quaking political and religious debates and feels too charged to discuss, even woman to woman? “No one talks about abortion on a personal level—there’s too much stigma attached,” says Aspen Baker, the cofounder of Exhale, an after-abortion counseling help line.

In a perfect world, no woman would ever need to end a pregnancy. But in reality, one in three women will have at least one abortion by the time she is 45, and these women run the gamut of ages, races, backgrounds and beliefs.

I'd argue that we're still not talking about it. I think it's definitely because of the stigma, but it's also that abortion is a very personal decision and should be kept private. Nobody wants to risk losing friends and family, even if said people are insanely anti-abortion. I'm still scared just to speak up from a purely political standpoint!

Sadly, commentors on the piece have taken this opportunity to wax poetic about how the article means that the evil pro-choice harpy-sluts and the abortion mafia are keeping women silent and conspiring to hide the fact that all women ever regret their babykilling. rolleyes A few have taken the opportunity to post the number to a clearly anti-abortion counseling hotline. I think we ought to set the record straight, sharing experiences if we feel comfortable and reminding these women that their bad experience does not entitle them to make decisions for all of us.

The article also has links to several related articles:
The Serious Health Decision These Women Are Ready to Talk About: Eight Women Share Their Abortion Stories
The first woman tells her [all-too familar horror] story about accidently going to a CPC. Only the sixth seventh, and eighth women seem to have had a positive experience, with the seventh being very surprised that it wasn't the horrible thing pro-life groups make it out to be.

What Women Ask Most About Abortion
This is an excellent FAQ. I'm probably going to put it in the library of logic.

Possibly irrelevant now that the election's over:

Hell yes she is!

I think that there would be far less argument over it if we women were more open about their personal experiences with abortion - more specifically, the women who have had them.

If we talked about it, people would realize: 1) women who get them are not evil, p***s-hungry harpies that are just ITCHING to get abortions, 2) that abortion is not about the baby's life, but the mother's body, and 3) that women they know and love have probably had an abortion.

I think the only reason people aren't open about it though is the judgment that they get; "you're a baby killer!" "abortion is murder!". If anything causes "post-abortion syndrome" ( rolleyes ), it's the pro-lifers.

Because, you know, those "evil, p***s-hungry harpies" also recieve a form of sick pleasure from killing the fetus inside them. Hell, sometimes they get pregnant on purpose just to kill the innocent baby, and sometimes it's even put back in the womb so they can abort it again!

In all seriousness, I've only read one copy of Glamour. I mostly read Seventeen, which has brought up the abortion issue before. I remember there was one article about a girl who regretted her abortion, and it gave information about abortions and such. There was another about political positions, and it gave both sides of the abortion arguement. There was also another article on what to do if you get pregnant, and it did list abortion as an option and some places to research your local abortion laws if you want to get one.

I agree with 20 Shades. It would be much easier to accept women who get abortions if more people realized it was also about the woman, and that not all women who get them are evil sluts who love to kill babies. A woman is not just a baby machine. A woman also has feelings and her own individual thoughts. I don't discuss abortion with my friends because almost all of them are pro-life (I live in Texas, so the majority of people here are pro-life. It seems the women here are more open about their pro-life views), and I don't want to get in a huge arguement about it with friends unless it was in a debate class where logos (appeal to logic arguement) is worth more than pathos (appeal to emotion arguement).

Yeah, it's a hard thing to talk about in real life. I feel so stupid because I know the debate like the back of my hand, but emotions just get in the way unless it's a forum.

Personally though, I think we can win on emotional appeals. I think I may be guilty of making one by pointing out the cruelty in forced pregnancy.

Oh, and this totally-not-a-parody story from a legitimate and serious newspaper proves that all women who have abortions are sluts and do it for fun:
Quote:

[...]
As I pushed my way through the crowd, one of the picketers yelled, "How could you do this? How could you kill a child?" What? It's more like, "How could I wait this long?" It wasn't until now that I was lucky enough to be pregnant with a child I had no means to support. I tell you, for a long time, I thought it would never happen to me!
[...]
The funny thing is, I actually have the pro-life movement to thank for this opportunity. If my HMO wouldn't have bowed to their pressure not to cover oral contraceptives, I never would've gotten pregnant in the first place. Then what would I be doing a week from Thursday? I'll tell you what I wouldn't be doing: going to an awesome abortion clinic where I'll be the center of attention from the minute I put my feet up in those stirrups. I wouldn't be looking forward to induced dilation of my cervical opening and suctioning of my uterus, either. And I sure as heck wouldn't get the chance to have a doctor insert a metal instrument into my womb to dislodge tissue from my uterine wall!
[...]

"I'm Totally Psyched About This Abortion!" from some newspaper called "The Onion", which I'm sure is a very reliable source.

but on topic, i wish more women could be open about their personal abortions. it would help to be able to go to someone and have them relate you by saying "me too". one woman in that article couldnt even say that when she drove her friend to get an abortion

Ah, yes, The Onion. America's Finest News Source. It may be satire, but it's still more reliable than Fox News. Besides, how many other news stations have a hilarious movie that involves weed, slutty pop stars, an angry news anchorman, corporate takeover, guys getting punched in the nuts, and terrorists?
