OK, so here it is. I have a topic of: Why are we (people in history as a whole) so facinated with violence. We have a long history of violence predating the Common Era (for those of you who don't know C.E. is a way for those of us with non-judeo-chirstian beliefs to say A.D.). This includes stories from Scred Texts, the Roman Colisseum, and the Witch Hunts of the 1800's.

Cause it is natural for us. Also, we have been numbed by society. Seeing ppl die and killed is just something thats not shocking anymore i think.

It triggers a sence of danger,
Danger triggers a certain hormone, who's name escapes me as of the current momment,
When one has gone through this danger and survived/ was victorious the experience tends to be slightly euphoric
When a group of people experience this euphoric pleasure they tend to bond.
Bonding makes people feel happy.
People want to constantly feel happy.
People continue to go to violent events for this euphoric happy.
confused
Its kind of farfetch but if you evaluate a number of events with this 'equation' you'll see that almost 95% of the time its true.

Theres another theory that has to deal with a selective group of people comming together as a result of violence, but I need to get it to the point where I can type it.

Just wanted to point out that "AD" is not judeo-christian, but just Christian. AD stands for "Anno Domini," which is Latin, and means "in the year of our lord." The full phrase is "Anno Domini Nostri Iesu Christi" - "in the year of our lord Jesus Christ." Jews also use the term "CE," just as they use the term "BCE," or "before the common era."

As for an answer to your question:
I feel that people have been so obsessed with violence because violence is a way of obtaining power. As can be seen with packs of animals, the alpha male will fight his way to the top, sometimes killing his opponent. With lions, for example, there will generally be one (maybe two) males leading the pack, and they will have to challenge the former leader of the pack for that right. When they win, the former leader must move on. A sick thing with this is that the two males who won would then kill all of the cubs in the pack and remate the females to ensure that their genes would continue the line.
What these lions do is similar to what humans do. The battle between them is like a war; area/country A wants to have power over area/country B, or vice versa, so they attack. This can create a cycle of violence, as country B will retaliate, and A will fight back.
Or, (and I'll give you a human example, now) we could look at the "conflict" (I am still of the opinion that it's a war) between America and Iraq. Al Qaeda felt that America was abusing its power and other peoples around the world, so it attacked. America, taking this as an opportunity to gain more power, turned around and blamed Iraq; this led to violence and bloodshed. For what? Power (which, in this case, may be translated into 'oil and other products').

I think it's just been put into our minds that it's not all that bad.

Though I think it IS bad and that it's something that needs working on. There's this guy in my class with a horrible temper, and when he gets angry he'll get into a fight. I keep my distance from him, but when I see it I just wonder what's going on in his mind. I don't like it at all.

I don't know what for violence should be neccessary. Maybe for being able to sell the next generation ego shooter, I don't know. On the other hand, even my loved fantasy games are using violence everywhere, setting others afire with a fireball or slaying them with your axe...

But, there's a big difference between the fantasy games and the ego shooters: Where the latter aim for more realism and are even used and supported by military training the former have clearly no reference to the real world. People try to get rid of their real aggression often with ego shooters or beat'em up style games, which though sometimes has a bad influence on them too, if they can't tell the difference...

I would love to live without any violence, on the other hand I still love to play xblast (a dynablaster/bomberman clone which I'm even in the development team...). Oh lordess, I'm fully of contradictions, am I.... rolleyes
