Hmm, personally I'm a huge fan pf labyrinthfish like gouramis and bettas (though these are solitairy fish). They don't need much space and are a whole different experience compared to livebreeders. I've heard people say ram ciclids do good in a 10 gallon too, but I wouldn't know personally.

Hmmm. I dunno.
I had a gouramis in my 10 gallon before it did fine with my other fish.

Aaah, I was referring to the betta's actually. True gouramis do combine good with other peacefull fish, I personally like putting them with tetras. Bettas though..... well from personal experience they can kill any live breeder, males mostly, and angelfish, and shrimps and crabs. They leave tetras alone. Speaking of, ever tried rasboras?

I would suggest, if you want variety One dwarf groumi, 1-2 otos, and a few danios. All of them are hardy, and it will help maintain a nice, interesting tank ^^
