Looking back at my culture, I was surprised that we actually have some myths, legends and scary stories that go way back. I'm going to tell you (from the top of my head) some beings/creatures that may be very different or similar to the ones that the world is familiar with:

Warning: You may have trouble pronouncing these words xd

arrow Aswang:These are like your vampires, and they, of course, hunt at night and are able to shift into any form. In most movies they are portrayed as bats, although they could also take in the form of cats, dogs and other humans
arrow Mananaggal:Like "aswang", only at a certain time of day, before they "hunt", they rub this sort of liquid (oil?) on their torso, and they soon disembody themselves. They then grow wings and leave the lower body on a hidden place, and hunt and eat people. (How do they keep their food in? xd ) These have been shown in many Filipino Horror movies. AT dawn they then go back to where they have hidden the lower part of their body and reattach themselves.
arrow Kapre: From stories in my childhood, Kapres are giant men always smoking a tobacco cigar that never runs out on the base of a tree (their home?). Most say that they are harmful, some say they are harmless, if you pay them proper respect.
arrow Tikbalang: A creature with the head of a horse and a human body (kind of like a centaur, only not... sweatdrop ). They are said to have foul-smelling breath and lure people with magical pranks. Some are said to eat not only fruits but human flesh as well.
arrow Tiyanak A baby monster! A mother will give birth to a baby, and the baby will transform to a horrible little monster and then back to an adorable baby again. They can be killed with holy water.
arrow White Lady: A lady ghost dressed in...white... sweatdrop ...I don't know if they are harmful or not but I think they just want to be seen. My aunty said that sometimes they help travellers who are (lost?), or warn them to not go to a certain direction. I think they are just restless spirits

We also have gnomes (who live on earth mounds and if you pass an earth mound you're supposed to say "Excuse me"), evil animals, and ghosts. Am not sure if we have werewolves.

Discussion time!!
arrow Have you heard of the mentioned monsters before?
arrow Any similarities or differences from your culture's monsters/beings?

Hi kababayan! mrgreen

Yes, we do have a rather rich supernatural mythology. We are also a highly superstitious people, we accept explanations for certain events that have highly unbelievable standards because we are a very religious people.

In a study done once, I think the Philippines was listed as one of the most religious and mysterious countries out there.

Or those little field elves that come out at night and if you step on them you get hurt the next day...I was told by my cousin who is from the philipines that her mom was burning leaved and accidentally burned one and so the next day she was covered in burns. She had to throw rice all over the house for forgiveness and then she was bette the next day. My cousin also told me about a growing rock that her mom told her to stay away from...Not sure why though...evil or something... eek

I think that one's called "Tik-tik". It has a really long tongue which it uses to pierce the womb of the woman while she is asleep, and uses it as some sort of straw to suck the fetus out of the womb. confused

No I went to the philipines only one when I was 2 but then a volcano blew up and I had to go to America. I'm half Philipino and Black and I live with my family on the Philipino side. My cousin is from the philipines. She lived there since she was 15. She loves to scare me with stories about ghosts in her school and scary comics she's read and myths and stuff. So does my grandma..... stare Everyone's against me...

Yep ^.^ The stories I get from my grandma though are kinda different. Like when she tells me if I don't eat and I go to sleep my soul will go and eat food and it won't be able to fit back in me. Or if I stay up to late my blood will turn white...and yes..I once believed these...And still sorta do...I Have so many stories like this stuffed in my head i'm surprised i'm not completely parnoid...

I knew I was forgetting that one! Doesn't the 'tik-tik' land on the roof (and since it was the old times they had those straw roofs?) and doesn't it suck it from the belly-button or something?

*looks at username* rolleyes
hehe...
Kapre are normally harmless but if you insult them or disturb thier sleep in the daytime, they can be pretty awful. Same goes for Nuno sa Punso and White Ladies. (No I'm not racist. mrgreen )

((wow. Filipinos are invading the guilds. i think all of the guilds i'm in have Filipinos in them.))
