I was just in the bookstore this evening and picked up the newest edition (30th anniversary) of the book The Princess Bride out of curiosity. I occasionally do this with books I have older editions of, just to see if there are new covers or intros, or what have you. I read that book some time ago, and the movie is my favourite movie ever (yes, the overemphasis is necessary).

When I read the book before it was a copy of the 25th (or possibly 20th, but I'm pretty sure it was the 25th) anniversary from the library. In the back of the book there was a single chapter 'transcribed' from the original manuscript for a sequel. Apparently there had been plans (or maybe just a fanciful thought) that Stephan King would do the 'transcribing' of this sequel but it must have fell through, because it never materialised. (See note below about S. Morgenstern for explanation of the 'transcribing'.)

Anyways, as I was reading the intro to this new edition (with a copyright date of 2007) two words smacked me in the face: Buttercup's Baby. As I scanned the following pages I found that the sequel is now in the works!

Anyways, I felt I had to share this wonderful news as this is a book I have been waiting for for years, and to hear that it is finally going to be! I was stunned with glee!

In a couple other threads I have had the discussion of which came first (book or movie) and various other details about the book have come up. I have found a site that explains the occurance of the name S. Morgenstern [link] and also you can see that the book did indeed appear before the movie here. (The book was first published in 1973, and the movie was not made until 1987.)

Well, I think I may have now gotten that bit of excitement out of my body so that I can go to sleep, but I want to know what you think.

Very cool! And thank you so much for clearing up the "book or movie first?" question.

Indeed, I felt the same. And from what I read in the little preview I think that it shall be an excellant sequel. heart

The idea of a sequel for The Princess Bride is quite exciting, as I really enjoyed the original.

On another, slightly related note, the 30th anniversary edition book, I had to put down. Far from reach. I couldn't read it. D:
