Here's a little idea, extension cables usually suck a**. Try using a USB hub.
I use one with 4 USB ports, it separates all the ports to a separate drive so you can use multiple objects at once, even if it's a ton of storage devices, they all get split to their own identity on your computer to run as they should. Also most USB hubs today have surge protection, it will cut off the single port of any device having a power failure so the rest of the devices connected can keep running safely, and of course you'll be alerted by a sound or dialog bubble that a device was disconnected, which of course will tell you something went wrong with the actual device.
If it makes the disconnection noise or alerts you of the disconnection when you try using your mouse through it, you know you need a new mouse. If it works just fine, throw that extension cable away.
