Welcome! Whether you've just won your first cat and have no idea where to start, or if you're the owner of a medicine cat and need to look up that specific herb once more, anything you could possibly need to know about roleplaying at ITW can be found here!

Some Important Notes

If you've read the books, you're off to a great start. First of all, this RP is set in the Lake territory held by the four clans of cats, not the Forest. Second of all, please understand while characters from the books exist here, they may not hold the same position they did in the novels, and owners may have even chosen new mates for certain cats. Due to this, some events that occurred in the books may be slightly tweaked here at Fos, or omitted altogether. Cats that joined Starclan in the books may even still be around.

If you haven't read the books, no worries! We're here to help you. There's a ton of information, don't be intimidated if it seems like too much. We won't be upset if you make a few mistakes along the way, and feel free to ask questions of our more senior RPers and those who have read the books!

Most importantly, don't feel like you have to read everything here before you roleplay. Just find the rules that apply to you by looking at the title of each post and read them, you can explore the others later as needed.

General RolePlaying Rules

I - Please be kind to anyone roleplaying, and try to include everyone. Check to make sure what territory others are RPing in before you start as well, if you want cats of different clans to interact it will have to be at Fourtrees or the border! If you feel ignored be sure to check where the other characters are! If owners are already RPing at Sunningrocks, they may not be ignoring your cat in Shadowclan camp on purpose, their character just can't meet up with yours!

II - Please no fighting between owners! In character fighting is welcome though, as clans do not get along with one another and sometimes clanmates don't either. If you do have a problem, try to work it out via PM.

III - Please do not God Mode. You can't move another person's character, and your cat can't be invincible in battle, dodging everything while dealing fatal blow after fatal blow. You cannot kill another persons cat without their consent. The only person that decides on the death of their cat is the owner.

IV - Please do not be afraid to enter the roleplay! If your cat has never been roleplayed before, you can start as a loner who has just rejoined the clan, or a cat that got separated a long time before. If you have a kit they can be taken in by an adult cat or you can find someone with a cat willing to play the mother. At the same time, feel free to also just RP your cat as one who has been in the clan all along, just as a more obscure member who didn't interact with many other cats until now.

V - If you have a kit or apprentice and would like them to become a medicine cat, talk to the owners of existing medicine cats and see if they would like to take on an apprentice. RP will be required to gain this rank, but if your cat does not take on the role of head medicine cat later they will not be RP required to keep. Still, we encourage RP of medicine cats, try not to work for the role and then stop RPing altogether.

VI - If you are familiar with the books be kind to those who do not understand the roleplay and guide them along. Do not yell at anyone who does not understand how some things work.

VII - Be realistic. Don't suddenly place your Riverclan warrior in Thunderclan camp, they would have been seen by a patrol.

VIII- Having a cat with an interesting background such as rogue, kittypet, or crossclan parents is fun, but limit yourself to one or two cats like that, and don't create your magic supercat with ten different bloodlines who's a warrior, Starclan's chosen, and a medicine cat who is welcomed by all clans when they keep crossing borders. The underlying idea is that if your cat breaks rules IC, there will be consequences IC. There have to be regular good warriors who follow the warrior code or the rule breakers just aren't unique anymore, and the base on which the shop is built, the world Erin Hunter built up and we enjoy, just crumbles.

IX - Check your drama at the door. If you have issues with someone or something please PM Starclan or Silverpelt, don't make a huge deal about it in the thread.

RolePlaying Rules Concerning Contact with Starclan

We all know that receiving visions from Starclan can be one of the most fun things to RP, but there are some guidelines that must be followed because having information supernaturally revealed to your cat without the consent of the other cat's owner is on the edge of god-moding and may spoil plots and RP the other owner hopes to create. The lines here are blurry, but I'll try to make them as clear as possible.

If your cat is a medicine cat you have the most liberties concerning Starclan visions and signs. You are allowed to come up with visions concerning your clan as a whole (example: There will be a drought in the future), and you do not need to clear it with anyone.

You are also allowed to receive signs concerning individuals in the clan. If your cat's dream is very specific and involves another character's preexisting background (example: Rainpaw's owner has RPed the apprentice going into Windclan territory. You want to have a Starclan cat visit your medicine cat and warns that Rainpaw has been crossing borders) you should check with the owners of any other cats involved. If your dream is vague, and the other owner won't have to participate, you do not need to clear it (example: One of our apprentices is in danger. It might have something to do with Lionpaw). Please use your best judgment, but you will have the most wiggle room on this rule.

If you have a medicine cat apprentice you have the same rights as a full medicine cat, with the added idea that that an apprentice would ask their mentor for help interpreting the less obvious. Before you start roleplaying visions you should confirm that an existing medicine cat will take you on. If medicine cats are not active in your clan at the time you wish to become a medicine cat, please post a request in the thread about it or contact a staff member. Once they have confirmed you can become a medicine cat you may start active contact with Starclan.

If you have a leader you also have the rights to visions. For example, in the books Firestar has visions and is visited by Spottedleaf. However, it is still considered unusual for a leader to receive so much contact from Starclan, so please try not to abuse these rights. A family member in Silverpelt soothing a concerned leader is alright, or warning of dangerous times ahead would be valid. A more cryptic vision might be shared with a medicine cat too.

If you have a regular kit, apprentice, warrior, or deputy, under normal circumstances you will not contact Starclan. One or two dreams at a key point in your cat's life will slide, but they should not involve another cat. A vision during an emergency situation (example: The medicine cat can't leave the den but needs your regular apprentice to get catnip. Starclan appears to you and shows you where it is.) is allowed at the prompting of a medicine cat or medicine cat apprentice. Special plots and situations may be cleared with a staff member and the owners of other effected cats, but if they happen too often even more restrictions may have to take place.

Once in a while kits and apprentices may begin to show a natural connection with those residing in Silverpelt, but you will either be informed of this by a staff member or will have to have it approved. If you do request a unique destiny your plot will need to be extremely well thought out, and certain powers might be more limited than others. For example, connection with a single Starclan warrior that helps your cat train and come up with good strategies has a better chance of being approved than Jaypaw's dream powers.

I'm not trying to be a dictator when it comes to roleplay. In fact the shop wants roleplay to flow as freely as possible, but I believed this was an important issue to address before Starclan contact got out of hand. It may seem a bit unfair, but if every single cat were to have these powers they wouldn't be a privilege anymore, and again, I hope to avoid any unintentional god-moding.

RolePlaying Daily life

At dawn, the deputy appoints the daily patrols.

Border patrols leave at dawn and sunset.

Several hunting patrols leave daily. Some Clans (like ShadowClan) prefer to hunt at night; the others generally hunt during daytime.

Some warriors always remain in the camp to guard it in case of an attack.

Mentors train their apprentices at a designated place, or take them on patrols.

Apprentices do chores such as: tidying up dens, change used bedding, and tending to queens and elders. The elders usually tell them stories while they give them moss balls soaked in water, fresh kill, or get rid of their ticks and fleas. New medicine cat apprentices learn the different herbs while more experienced medicine cat apprentices help with minor sicknesses, kitting, and injuries.

The medicine cat treats and tends to injured or ill cats, trains their apprentice if they have one, and leaves to gather herbs when supplies are running low.

The leader oversees what happens in the Clan, consults with warriors, and calls a meeting if needed. (e.g. a kit becoming an apprentice).

Cats who stay in the camp usually rest, sunbathe in the clearing, eat prey or share tongues. Cats are most active during the morning and late afternoon; they often rest during the night and at noon.

At night, one or more warriors stay awake to guard the camp while the others sleep

RolePlaying Your Mentor and Apprentice

There are many things to do if you would like to roleplay your apprentice! First you'll need to find a mentor by asking around in the main thread, there will be many eager volunteers. If you want to keep your apprentice from growing for a bit so you can roleplay some more don't be afraid to ask your colorist to freeze them at that stage temporarily! Some ideas to get mentors started are below!

I- Take your apprentice around the territory and show them the markings of other cats. Show them places where not to go, such as other cat territories and places and Twolegplace.

II- Take them to see the moonpool.

III- Take them to a Gathering at the island.

IV- Take them on patrol.

V- Make them care for the elders if there are any in the clan. Duties include cleaning out moss bedding of the elders, bringing food to them, and taking care of ticks their fur or other illnesses.

VI -Teach them to hunt for the clan.

Help with Ceremonies

Calling before Gatherings

This is said by leaders and occasionally deputies before all clan meetings, even at the Fourtrees Gathering.

"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the (meeting place of clan here) for a clan meeting!"

Warrior Naming Ceremony

This or similar is spoken by leaders during the warrior naming ceremony.

"I, (name) of (clan), call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn.

Do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this clan, even at the cost of your life?"

"I do"

"Then by the powers of Star Clan I give you your warrior name."

(Leader steps forward and rests muzzle on top of apprentices head. Apprentice licks leaders shoulder.)

"(apprentice name), from this moment you will be known as (new warrior name). Star Clan honors your bravery and your strength and we welcome you as a full warrior of (clan)."

Apprentice Naming Ceremony

This or similar is spoken by leaders during the apprentice naming ceremony.

"I, (name) of (clan), call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these kits. They wish to train to understand the ways of your noble code and I commend them to you as apprentices in their turn.

Do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this clan, even at the cost of your life?"

"I do"

"(mentor), you are ready for an apprentice. You will be mentor to (new apprentice name)"

(Apprentice steps forward and greets new mentor)

Honoring the Dead

When a clan member dies their body is placed in the middle of the camp, all of the cats of the clan old enough to catch their own prey come and sit around the body. They sing songs, share stories and say there goodbyes. Then those closest to the dead member lay and share tongues with the body for the whole night. Then the body is taken out to the burial place near the camp and is buried.

History of the Clans

The story of the beginning of the warrior Clans has been passed down by cats of all Clans, from elder to warrior, from warrior to apprentice, from queen to kit. The story is never the same twice, and parts grow uncertain, or they become suddenly clear in the telling. There are some cats who walk dimly, their names and deeds lost in the sweet fog of the elders' den, for the warrior Clans have roamed the forest for moons beyond counting....

Many moons ago the forest was a wilderness, untamed by territories. In the north lay sweeping moorland; in the south was dense woodland. On the edge of the trees, a tumbling river flowed out of a dark ravine.
Cats came into the forest. They were drawn by the soft rustlings of small creatures, shadows under the water, and the sudden commotion of birds' wings in the trees. These were not warrior cats. They lived in small groups, not yet Clans. There were no borders set down. And they fought constantly, fearful that prey might run out and that their overlapping territories were being threatened. It was a lawless, bloody time for the forest, and many cats died.

One night, when the moon was full, the cats agreed to meet at a clearing in the forest surrounded by four great oak trees. They argued over stolen prey. Claws flashed; challenging yowls rang across the forest. A terrible battle followed, and soon the ground was wet with spilled blood.

Many cats died that night. Exhausted by their wounds, the survivors slept where they had fought. When they woke they were bathed in moonlight. All around them they saw the spirits of their slain kin, no longer torn and bloodied but shining like fallen stars.

They huddled on the ground, and as the spirits spoke, they saw terrible visions of the future. They saw the forest drowned in blood, their kits stalked by death at every pawstep. And they knew that the fighting had to end.

"Unite or die" said the spirits.

From among the living cats, a black female was the first to speak. She rose from the ground on stiff, battle-wearied legs.

"My name is Shadow" she mewed. "How should we unite, unless we have a leader? I can hunt in the depths of the darkest night. Let Shadow rule the forest!"

"And lead us into darkness too!" meowed a silvery grey tom with green eyes. "I am River! I move through the forest along secret paths and hidden places. It is River, not Shadow, who should unite the forest!"

"The forest is more than a river and shadow", growled a wiry brown female. "Wind alone reaches its distant corners. I am as fast as the wind that blows from the high moors. I should be the ruler."

The largest surviving cat was called Thunder. He was a fiery orange tom with amber eyes and large white paws. "What good is any of that compared to my strength and skill at hunting? If any cat was born to rule, it is I!"

A furious yowling broke out under the four great oaks, watched in silence by the spirit-cats. Dark clouds suddenly blew across the moon, and the living cats trembled in fear. On the top of a high rock, they saw a tabby cat, one of the fallen, her fur shining though there was no light in the sky. Her eyes flashed angrily at the cats on the ground.

"You are all as foolish as ducks!" she meowed. "Can't you think beyond yourselves for one moment? Think of your kits!"

The four cats - Shadow, River, Wind and Thunder - looked up at the tabby, but none of them spoke.

"The forest is big enough to feed all your families and many more," She meowed. "You must find other cats like you, choose a home in the forest, and set down borders."

At that moment, the moon broke free of the clouds, revealing a circle of starlit spirit-cats around the edge of the clearing. A white tom stepped forward. "If you do this," he meowed, "we will reward you with eight more lives, so that you may lead your Clans for many moons to come."

Next to speak was a slender tortoiseshell. She stepped forward and stood beside the white tom. "We will watch over you from SilverPelt, " she promised, and lifed her eyes to the crowded path of stars that swept across the night sky. "We will visit you in your dreams and guide you on your journeys."

"Once a month," meowed the white tom, "at the full moon, you will gather together here, between the four great oak trees, for a night of truce. You will see us above you in SilverPelt and know we are watching. And if blood is spilled on those nights, you will know we are angry."

"You will be warriors!" yowled the tabby from the high rock.

Thunder, River, Wind, and Shadow bowed their heads.

"From now on, you will live by a warrior code. Your hearts will be filled with courage and nobility, and if you must fight, it will be not for greed, but for honor and justice."

There was a long silence. Finally Thunder nodded his broad orange head. "This is wise advice. I believe we can choose our territories and lay down borders fairly, in peace."

One by one, the other cats murmured their agreement. Then they returned to their homes and sought out cats like themselves, with similar strengths and abilities. River found cats willing to fish for their prey. Shadow gathered nighttime hunters with clever minds and sharp claws. Thunder found hunters who could track prey through the thickest undergrowth. To Wind came the fastest runners and cats who loved the open moors. Then they divided the forest so each Clan had enough prey to survive, and all the cats could live in safety. And when the leaders returned to the four great oaks for the first night of the full-moon truce, their starry ancestors gave them eight more lives, as they had promised.
There was not always peace between the Clans, but that was to be expected - cats are born with claws and teeth for a reason. Still, as long as they lived by the warrior code, their fallen ancestors would watch over them and guide them through their lives.

And so the age of the warrior Clans began.

Story from warriorscats.com

Clan Mythology

Tiger Clan:

The great Tiger Clan once roamed the forest of clan cats. The members of this Clan were cats of the night. Their bodies were as big as horses with jet black stripes that marked their pelt. From them we received the night sight as well becoming the night hunters we are today. Some of the coats of the cats today carry their ancestor's markings so that we remember them.

Lion Clan:
Lion Clan were as big as Tiger Clan, their fur a golden yellow that shone like the rays of the sun. From the Lion Clan we received the love of the sun's warmth as well as their mighty roar. Some of the coats of the cats still shine this fire in the rays of the dying sun, in remembrance of these ancestors.

Leopard Clan:
Leopard Clan were the swiftest of any cats, their fur golden and spotted with black paw prints. Leopard Clan gave all cats speed for safety as well as hunting. Some cats today are marked with their pawprints in remembrance of these great hunters.

There is a trace of all great cats in every cat today!

Basic Clan Tempers and Camps

This roleplay currently centers around the four main clans. Bloodclan is in the process of forming. Loners are around as well. KittyPets can be found in Twolegplace.

Starclan exist but have not been released yet. The Tribe of Rushing water has not been discovered.

Thunder Clan

Thunderclan are well built cats. They are always there to help another clan and work hard to uphold the warrior code. Thunderclan must be strong to defend and keep highly desirable territory. They are excellent climbers and forest hunters. The Clan's main prey are mice, voles, squirrels, and the occasional rabbit, as well as birds such as starlings, magpies, wood pigeons, blackbirds, and thrushes. They are a very loving clan and family oriented.

The camp is well protected by the side of a cliff, and surrounded by a thorn barrier. Highledge is a ledge where the leader stands to make announcements and host ceremonies. There is a Cave near the top that is the Leaders den.

The warriors sleep under a large thornbush. The senior warriors sleep nearest to the center of the nest where it is the warmest. Sometimes the young warriors are invited to join the senior warriors for eating, which is a great honor.

The queens usually share warrior quarters, but when they are expecting kits or nursing them they stay in a nest in or near the nursery, which is under a bramble thicket.

The elders have their own place under a hazel bush. The elders are well looked after by the warriors and apprentices. It's an apprentice job to clean the moss bedding, fetch food for them, clear away ticks and administer other medicine given by the medicine cat. A cat is considered an elder when it can no longer care or hunt for itself, and battles become too dangerous for them.

The medicine cats sleep in their own area cut off from the rest of the clan. They have their own cave, it has room to accommodate sick cats and the entrance is guarded by brambles.

In a cave the apprentices sleep away from the warriors and leader. They eat just outside and share tongues there. It is here they usually wait for their mentor.

Shadow Clan

The shadowclan cats are generally considered the bad apples of the clans. They are very secretive and very rarely will help the other clans with anything. They tend to be the ones to want to take more territory for hunting. They live in the swampy lands and are immune to the poisonous swamps that litter the area. They don't have many trees, so they are not the best climbers. They are excellent at hiding there scents, as well as hiding themselves, and they enjoy manipulating others and have no use for weakness. They are a strong clan but lack compassion. They are merciless when it comes to catching other cats on there territory and if taken prisoner you might not survive the night. There is a saying that the cold wind blows over their hearts making them cruel and mean. Their main prey are reptiles and amphibians, such as lizards and frogs.

The ShadowClan Camp is concealed between tangles of brambles and low-hanging branches, and is a dip beneath the pine trees. The entrance is through a thorn tunnel. The leader makes their announcements from a branch hanging over their den.

All of the dens are spaced out and under bramble bushes.

The medicine cat again is cut off from the clan but are under their own bramble bush. The medicine den has a sandy, hollowed-out floor covered in dried pine needles.

Wind Clan

When clan cats rule over the moors they have thick fur and can make it through the coldest of winters. They are used to wind and are able to keep there eyes open while it blows in there faces. They are the fastest of all clan cats due to the type of prey they have to chase after. They hunt mostly rabbit, some birds, mice and voles. They are usually kind and do not mind helping out other clans in need.

The WindClan Camp is a shallow scoop in the ground of the moor. Unlike other camps, it does not have any natural protection; they rely on the warriors to protect it. There are several boulders nearby, the highest being called the Tallrock and used by the leader to call meetings.

The nursery is under a gorse bush. Although it is still possible to see the sky from inside, it tends to keep them mostly dry.

The medicine cat's den is in a crevice in the rocks. The sick cats tend to sleep near the base of said rocks.

The elders' den is in an old badger set.

The other cats, including the leader, prefer to sleep under the open sky, although in bad weather, they retreat in burrows made by rabbits, foxes or badgers.

They don't like confrontation and will back down in a fight if they are out numbered. They are a clan that keeps tradition and will protect their traditions, they care well for their elders and love to share stories.

RiverClan

Riverclan cats can swim in deep water and the river with ease. Their coats are oily from all the fish they eat, which in turn protects them from water getting to their skin and causing chills. Their main prey is fish, and they are the only clan that knows how to catch fish by keeping their shadows off the water and quickly snagging the fish with their claws. River Clan cats tend to have a distinct scent of the water and their prey. They will help other clans but prefer to keep to themselves if possible. They are secretive and keep strictly to the warrior code.

Their camp is on a small island in the middle of two streams and is well hidden by seaweed and water plants. It can be reached by swimming or by crossing the stream via stepping stones.

The nursery, elders' den and leader's den are under dense bramble thickets.

The medicine cat's den is under a thorn bush overhanging the stream; the ground below it was washed away, leaving a pool to get water from.

StarClan

Star Clan is the tribe of heavenly warriors that watches over all clan cats, you see them in the SilverPelt. They can communicate with the clans through dreams. They will send signs to their clans if there is great danger. They all live in one territory where they live in luxury, there is never a worry for prey and the weather is always sunny. They appear ghost like when they show themselves to those on the earthly plain.

BloodClan

A group of rogues and kittypets who have organized. Not much is known about them, except that they're trouble!

(C) Map Erin Hunter

Greenleaf Twolegplace

A place where twolegs frequent a lot in the time of GreenLeaf, They have been heard to call it a 'Campground' Whatever that means.

Horseplace

A place where there are giant thundering beasts. Rule of thumb, generally they are confined by their fences... but be aware if you go inside. Their hooves could crush a cat!

MoonPool

Leaders of the clan come to accept their nine lives here, and medicine cats come to share dreams with Starclan. No cat may attack any cat traveling to Moonpool. There are steps that lead to an open area where lies a small pool of water, and there is an opening at the top that allows moonlight to shine though.

Any leaders, medicine cats and medicine apprentices go there just before moon high and enter the cave. At moon high the moonlight shines down on the pool, and then the cats place touch the water and travel to Starclan in their dreams to receive messages.

Medicine cats regularly travel there when the moon is half full. They also can see if Starclan accepted their choice of apprentice then.

The Island

This is where all clans meet to share thoughts, information and announcements of new warriors or apprentices. They meet every month when the moon is full, and they all gather at moon high. There is a high limb that the leaders climb to look over all clans and where they discuss plans among themselves. There is to be no fighting at the Gathering or it is said Starclan will rain down their wrath. The leaders then call the Gathering together and all cats remain silent and listen to the announcements. Then it is ended and all cats return safely home.
