The flock of vultures flying haphazardly behind him, hissing and cackling, seemed not to affect him at all. Werevu flapped, just ahead of them, leading the search for the cub. Msiba had told him Ufunuo was the one, and Ufunuo was the one he would catch. The cape vulture knew that too many disappointments had sprung up over the course of their stay with the Aka'mleli. Msiba was so close, so very close to the edge. It wouldn't take much more to push him over, and when he crossed the line, Werevu feared the consequences.

As the lion's bonded, the cape vulture felt a strange sense of duty and loyalty to Msiba. It wasn't what he was quited used to. Werevu was used others being loyal to him, bound by duty to him. As a king, he was completely unused to following others' orders. So he could hardly be blamed for feeling miffed at being treated like a... a commoner.

He was quite a bit larger than any other vulture, a size which he deserved, given his position. And it might not have been obvious to those earth-bound cats, but he was quite the handsome fellow. He was very much a catch in the vulture world. Handsome bird for handsome lion.

The vulture suddenly glanced back at the cawing bunch behind him. "Shut your mouths!" He hissed. Had he been able to, he might have shot daggers out of his eyes. As motley as his crew seemed, they were the best of the best, and though he could hardly say he trusted them any, they were useful.

The vultures fell silent immediately. Werevu was their king, after all. What he said went. Whatever the boss said. That was the way it went, and that was the way it would always go. Until the day he died, Werevu would be the almighty leader of the vultures. Which did, in fact, explain the birds' presence in the skies above the valley for so long. After all, vultures did not hang around a place unless there was food to be scavenged. And after a while, that food did run out. But the vultures had remained, much to the delight of Msiba, and many thanks to Werevu.

"There they are!"

A call from somewhere within the pack of flying vultures.

Werevu glanced down. Sure enough, there he was. Ufunuo. And another one. The vulture scowled. Complications again. Ubele? He squinted. He wasn't sure. Never had been wonderful as connecting names to faces. Only the ones that truly required it.

"Alright fellas," Werevu said quietly. A light had ignited within his eyes, burning brightly. Excitement. "Let's go grab him. Kill the other one."

A yawn parted the cub's maw, his body stretched out, head resting against one paw. He was tired, it had been a long day, a frightening day. So much had happened, Kuruka and Peke had been lost, he had no idea where Dumu was, they had rushed home to stop a horrifying vision from coming true, and on the way they had been attacked by vultures.

Now, Ufunuo simply wanted to rest. He had been relieved to find that Ngao was okay, they had been in time, or maybe the vision had already happened, she had seemed to be limping. Either way, she was safe, and Hifadhi, and most importaly, Ubele and Daga were safe.

He did not know where Hifadhi had gone, or where Ngao had gone afterward, but she had told them to stay hidden here, and that was what he intended to do. Maybe he would take a nap, he needed one, and they were safe here. Or so he thought.

A shriek echoed through the air. It was perhaps fortunate that Daga had not been so convinced of his safety, for no sooner had his young friend laid his head down to rest, then the dark shadows filled the sky once more. Damn! Those beasts were relentless, well if it was a fight they wanted, then he would give it to them.

"Look out kid! We've got company!"

Ubele felt completely drained, emotionally and physically. The last few weeks had left her unable to do anything but feel fear, anger, and worry. After the quake, the frightening vision, and the vulture attack, Ubele was not sure what to do next. The only thing she knew was that she wanted her family together again and she wanted a chance to rest.

She could barely keep her eyes open, and she struggled to remain awake. Curled up next to her brother, she had at last found at least a moment to relax, but it was not to be. Her eyes flew open at the now familiar sound of vultures approaching.

"Not again," she moaned as she searched the sky. Ufunuo's new bird companion Daga called out to the them in warning. With effort, she struggled to her paws, her frustration and fear giving her enough energy to be furious. Why wouldn't the stupid birds leave them be. Gazing up the sky, her hackles rose at the sight of the dark masses. There were a great number of them and she had no idea how they would be able to fight them off.

"Ufu! Daga! What are we going to do?"

Ajili was getting closer and closer to the vultures in the distance. What used to look like dark, deformed splotches flying up and down now looked like large, angry vultures. With each step she took, she found her pace getting quicker and quicker. Yes, she could definitely see now...She heard tiny voices shouting. Then she gasped.

The vultures were flying at two lion cubs.

Heart surging in shock, Ajili stared in horror. She could not let it happen. She would not let it happen. Her once calm, motherly expression shifted as she curled her lips to reveal sharp teeth. The hair rose on her back and she raced forward. "Leave them ALONE!" she roared. She leaped into the air and smashed a vulture away from one cub with one heavy swipe of a paw. Landing in front of the two cubs, she stretched her claws and stared down the flock of vultures. There were so many; too many. There was no way she could hold them off for long. And with the vehemency at which they were attacking, there was no way they'd let up. With a sharp glance left, then right, she found there was no where to hide. It was bare on all sides. Anything that could be used as shelter was too far away.

"Stay behind me, cubs." she ordered calmly to the two behind her. Before she could say much else, more vultures were flying at her. With a snarl, she slashed them away. But they were only replaced by even more. One took her by surprise by landing on her back and clawing it, but she managed to reach back and rip it off. They were like large, cruel flies that would constantly replace themselves. Blood trickled off her back but she ignored the pain. Her mind flashed to thoughts of her own cub and she tensed her muscles. Those vultures would not hurt these cubs.

But how long could she hold them off?

He was on his paws in a flash, horror filling his eyes as shadows descended on him. Vultures! Why? Why were they being attacked by vultures, again, what did the birds want and why did they think he and his sister had it?

"I don't know."

A protective snarl touching his maw, Ufunuo closed the distance between himself and his sister, standing between her and the vultures. Terrified himself, he knew only one thing to do, protect his sister, he would not lose her. A deep breath, a paw raised, he prepared to fight as best he could.

But then something, someone, was in front of him, screaming at the vultures, striking at the creatures with paws much larger than his own. A lioness? Who was she? He did not recognize her, then why was she helping them? His maw opened to say something, then closed again. There would be time for questions and thanks later, for now they had vultures to worry about.

He did as she said, staying near the larger lioness, talons striking out at whatever vultures flew close enough, ducking beneath her to escape their grasping talons.

"Leave us alone!"

With a piercing shriek, Daga dove into the mass of vultures. They were after the cubs, after his friend. Whether they sought to kill or capture he could not yet be certain, but he would not allow it. He would NOT!

Today was the day, the day that Ficha had sworn off her uselessness and was determined to be come an active member of the pride once more. She was sore, her wounds ached, and she was a still weary from all the news that had been passed onto her in the last few days but she refused to sit idle and be a drain upon this pride any longer. There were lions out here that needed her and pretending to be Nyonda any longer for the sake of their comfort was not enough. She would go out today, rise from the dead in many minds, and she would help those that had needed her.

Standing up and walking for the first time in a long while was difficult, it strained her wounds, though she gritted her teeth and simply bore that ache. They were healed enough now, in her opinion, that she needed to get out anyway. The strain on her muscles to move after sitting still for so long attested to that fact; they were sore from their lack of use. The sun bathed down on her, swamping her in warmth that was almost over-bearing after being so long in the cool darkness of her, no, Nyonda and Umoja's den. Hakiki soared out of the cave at her side, worry lines creasing her face despite her relief to be able to fly out again. She was scared Ficha was going to over do this.

"I don't know where to start," she began, her eyes sweeping out across the land before her. It was then that she heard the roar of a lioness and, as her attention was drawn in that direction, the more subtle sounds of screaming cubs. Her heart thudded as she swung her face in that direction, eyes narrowing on what she could see at this distance. The sky was full of some dark mass and even as she stared, realization dawned upon her - the vultures. They were coming from the direction she had heard the screaming and she could only assume the worst. Hadn't Ukweli told her that the cubs were gone, though, somewhere safe? Fear ran through her as she pushed herself first into a trot, then a jog, wanting to get there quickly but knowing that her body just wouldn't take this. Her legs pumped as hard as she dared and slowly, everything came into sight.

She saw the lioness first, amidst a flurry of black wings, fighting against the talons and beaks that came whirling at her. She didn't know the lioness but something about her didn't seem dangerous, at least not to her, but certainly towards those vultures. It seemed as if she were defending something, but at the distance she was at, it took her a long time to figure out just what it was. That's when she saw them, the two cubs that were mirror images of one another, the two cubs that she would have given her life to protect. "No," she breathed as she pushed herself faster, Hakiki realizing it at the same time as she did. Hakiki was just as close to her previous bonded's children as the lioness at her side was and for the moment, she forgot Ficha's fragile state. There would be no talking sense into her now, and she wasn't sure she really wanted to. "No," Ficha growled again, her body forgetting the pain that was shaking up through her mind, putting it on the back burner as she found the speed that had eluded her before, "you will not hurt them!" Her words escalated as she ran forward until the last world was pure roar and barely detectable as any form of coherent phrase.

She reached them, slower than she liked but as fast as she could make her body go. She dove into the flock of birds, paws swiping with out-stretched claws. Over head, she heard Hakiki shriek as she swirled down to hover over the cubs, attacking the vultures as best she could, aiding Ufunuo as he clawed at those that got too close. Ficha was swallowed up by blind rage for a moment, even as claws found her back, her tender spots. She realized quickly that she wouldn't last long, however, not like this, and then there would be little protection left to the cubs. Her eyes swept over the masses swirling around her, attacking those that got too close or got in her way. They all seemed to be centered around one figure, one vulture. Birds often followed their flock leader and perhaps that was him. With a growled roar of rage, she charged through the feathered fiends around her, eyes locked onto the feathered beast as she prepared herself to strike.

Ubele stared at the gathering mass of vultures and had no idea of what to do. She was so scared, she couldn't think. After all that they had went through, after all that they had survived, they were going to die like this? No! She would not let that happen. Her brother, her twin, seemed to think the same thing. He stood protectively in front of her, attempting to shield her. But she would not let Ufu face them alone. She moved to stand next to him. They would not take her brother from her. Not while she could still breathe.

Suddenly, a shape jumped in front of them. An adult lioness, one she did not recognize was shielding them and fighting off the raging birds. Ubele stared at her, unsure as to why the lioness was here, but grateful beyond words that she was. Ubele began to have hope that they might live through this. However, that hope slowly died as the birds continued to come, slowly wearing down their unknown helper. She didn't think the other female could hold them off for too long. Crouching, Ubele screamed as loudly as she could, hoping that it might serve to startle a few of the birds and perhaps attract attention of help nearby.

It seemed to work. Another form came barreling out of nowhere to attack the vultures. This lioness was very familiar though. At the sight of her, Ubele couldn't help but let out a sob of relief. They might survive this attack after all.

Ufunuo growled, reeling to swat at the vulture that had grabbed his tail as if it meant to drag him into the open. His talons sank into the earth, grasping at the grass, fighting against the creature's pull.

"Let go!"

And then he was free, tumbling across the ground as his momentum carried him forward. Ow, that hurt, stupid vultures, had Daga rescued him? Daga! He barely had time to think, the vultures were on him again, but something else had caught his attention, the familiar form of a lioness.

Mama? No, it wasn't here, it didn't smell like her. It was, Ficha? But he thought--how could it be Ficha? Then where was his mother? He shook his head, clearing his thoughts, he would have to ask later, there was no time to now.

On his paws again, Ufunuo lashed out at a nearby vulture, ducking beneath talons. He had to stay moving, if he was moving, it'd be harder for them to catch him, or so he hoped.

A sharp roar reverberated through Ajili's body and her heart leapt in surprise at the sound. Another lion? Good or bad? She whipped her head around just in time to see a large, cream-colored lioness jump beside her and begin to attack the vultures. She heaved a sigh of relief at the help. Obviously from the warnings the other lioness was shouting, she wasn't there to do harm; to the cubs, anyway. Things were beginning to look up. And the male cub behind her was definitely holding his own, along with the help of his bonded. The girl was, too, in her own way.

Taking so much of her attention off of the attacking birds, Ajili didn't notice one flying right at her head. It latched onto her muzzle and pecked her sharply, drawing blood. Ajili snarled and grabbed the creature with her claws and threw it to the ground. She broke its bones under her weight and in moments, it was dead. But still, more came. Why, she wondered, jumping and slashing another away. Why would a large flock of vultures attack two cubs? Why were they there? Certainly there was plenty of..."food" for them after the earthquake. Maybe they had just gotten cocky?

"You're not getting anywhere, beasts!" Ajili roared, much louder and more spitefully than one might expect from her small stature. "You'd better quit while you're ahead, or you'll all die!" Despite her warning, another vulture came at her. She jumped and snapped at it with her teeth, startling it off. There was no way the vultures would keep coming...With her and the other female lioness (who was managing to fend off many vultures, despite wounds that marred her creamy fur), the vultures wouldn't last long.

Screeches everywhere. Wings slapped the air as the vultures launched themselves onto the cubs, then the lioness. And finally, the last one.

Werevu felt something jolt within him. She was so familiar. So much like Hisia, but not. Had it not been for the barely healed wounds that riddled the lioness's body, he would have taken her to be the lioness that had so willingly given her trust to Werevu's bonded and the band of interlopers. The lioness that had so easily fallen for Msiba. And perhaps that he, too, had slowly fallen for. The cape vulture had no way of knowing, only thoughts and assumptions he made in his mind. They were both private creatures, he and his bond, and from the beginning they had unspokenly kept their secrets to themselves. Neither had asked much of the other. They needn't have. Their bond went beyond words, for though each treated the other with uncharacteristic distance, they knew themselves just how valuable the other was. Just how much they relied on each other.

Around him, he felt the mass of vultures beginning to falter, to hesitate. Two cubs was one matter. Two cubs defended by two lionesses, both driven by an incredible sense of what seemed to be motherly protection - or perhaps it was just the need to protect the cubs, they were royal ones after all, were they not? - was another. Their king had never said anything to them about the two lionesses.

And how could he have? He had had no idea. Where had they sprung from? He was beginning to truly understand Msiba's frustration. Time after time, these lions had foiled their plans. Time and again, new plans needed to be made.

He was not used to failure. He was a king. He tolerated none of it within his subjects, and he himself did not expect to fail. One didn't get to his position in the cutthroat world of gigantic scavenger birds without knowing what success meant.

"No!" He cawed, his voice rising, somehow, above the mixed cackle of the flock around him. "Fight them! Grab the cub! The cub!"

The sound of his voice seemed to rejuvenate the flock, as the vultures once more threw themselves at the lions. Such encounters between lion and bird were rare, Werevu knew, but this time... This time there was no avoiding it. They needed the damn seer cub, and they needed it fast. Werevu was not about to face Msiba's wrath.

Yet none of the lions were fighting quite so valiantly as the creme pelted lioness. So familiar and yet so strange. Though those half healed wounds riddled her body, she threw herself into defending the cubs with such abandon as Werevu had never before seen in his life. And where had she come from in the first place?

He dropped, wanting to get a better look at her. He wanted to be the one who added more scars to that coat of hers. He was king. He deserved the bravest fighter.

Around him, the vultures dropped too, amongst calls of, "Protect the king!" Together the body of flapping wings and razor sharp beaks and claws descended upon the lions.

It didn't take a genius to see the minimal hesitation in the birds above and even as enraged as she was, Ficha was completely aware of it. Were they intimidated? The thought rushed through her mind as she let out a fierce snarl, her maw contorted and fangs bared. Then a voice rang out above her, from the direction she was heading, from the bird she had aimed for as soon as she stepped foot into the battling flock. It rang out and egged them on, pushed them towards their goal - which she knew, now, was to get one of the cubs.

"Hakiki, stay with the twins!" she growled loudly, her eyes not even bothering to glance away from her goal and towards the one her message was intended for. Hakiki's beak clacked with a loud shrill as she simply nodded, not looking that way either, and swooped in a turn above the cubs' head. She clawed with sharp talons at any who got too close, though she had more than once felt the stab of them in her own back before she could rip from their grips. There were just too many for her in this uneven battle - whatever Ficha's plans, she hoped they were done quickly.

Ficha continued her prowl through the bodies of vultures that swarmed around her, hissing beneath her breath as talons, time and time again, dug into her flesh. They aimed for her weak spots, trying to beat her down with them. She felt weary already from the over exertion, but there was no way she was going down without protecting her niece and nephew. She batted, clawed, and bit at the bodies that swarmed around her and tried to block her vision - it was like being stuck in one large cloud of blackness. With the cries of 'protect the king', she felt her body tensing and it was only after the growl reached her ears that she realized she was snarling loudly. That's when she saw him, the bird she had picked out of the masses before, dipping down as if he were coming towards her. Inwardly, she was almost amused beneath her anger - the one thing she wanted and it was coming right to her. "You are not taking those cubs!" she yelled, almost growled, at the figure. Then, with a unintelligible roar of pure fury, she launched herself forward at the large bird. Her body pushed her into a leap, jaws cracked wide to ensnare him and claws aimed to capture, her intent to mangle, dismember, and just generally kill the beast.

He wouldn't take them away from her too.

Circling above Ufunuo, Daga let out a screech, diving at a vulture that had dared get to close, closing his talons around it's neck before flinging it's heavy body to knock another of the creatures from the sky. They just kept coming, far too organized for his liking, suspicious behavior even for vultures.

Enough, he would sort it out later, drag the answers from their carcasses if he had to. Right now, he had to protect Ufunuo and the others from these infernal beasts.

Why were there so many vultures, and why did they keep coming after him? Ufunuo didn't understand, why wouldn't they leave him alone?

"Go away! We haven't done anything to you!"

They were the Aka'mleli, they had a bond with Hestia, so why were birds, even vultures attacking them? Weren't vultures supposed to be scavengers, not hunt--that was what Daga had said, they had become hunters and had to be returned to their place as scavengers. But why?

He was tired, exhaustion settling in once more, echoed by the sting of cuts where talons had struck him. They had to escape, but to where? Why wouldn't the vultures just leave them alone?

Ohh, s**t.

Werevu felt his heart sink as he made the mistake he had never intended to make. Now they knew what the vultures were here for, and now they would fight all the harder to protect the cubs. He beat his wings as he descended, inwardly scolding himself for making such a rookie mistake.

Always, always make sure the greatest secrets were kept secret. He had learned as much from having Msiba as his bonded. Both vulture and lion, so cunning in their own different ways. It had meant they had shared a bond that went beyond words. They worked around each other, sometimes, perhaps, even through each other. But regardless, whatever they did meshed well as a team.

He was beginning to get a familiar leaden feeling in his wings, as he was sure all the rest of the vultures were feeling. Being so heavy, extended periods of flight did not suit them well. Yet sheer pride forced Werevu on, and he knew that only fear of retribution kept his followers up in the air. Around him, vultures were dropping by the second, either too flight-weary to continue, or having been caught by the razor sharp claws of one of the two lionesses below.

No, they would not ruin the plan! They couldn't.

With a hiss, he realized the cream lioness had launched herself at him. Noticed it too late, too late to do anything with his heavy wings.

"The king! The king!" Abandoning their fight, the vultures rallied to Werevu, massing about their leader as the realization of just how grim the situation was enveloped the dwindling flock.

But it was useless.

He felt, almost at the same time, the fangs and the claws, and before he knew it, he was pinned to the ground, vultures shrieking above him. But he was aware only of the stark hatred that rang in the lioness's eyes as she loomed above him.

And there he knew. This would not end well for him.

((Mm, like Amon suggested, it would probably be easier if we just reduced this to an exchange between Ficha and Werevu until the end? x3))

She felt her paws reach home more than she saw it. By the time she had actually grabbed the vulture, swirls of dark, feathered bodies had clouded her vision and it was only by sheer instinct that she pushed through to find her target. Beaks and talons tore at her throat, scarping and scratching, but she refused to give up her goal. She shook her head violently, clearing away some of the beasts around it until she could see her prize pinned beneath her on the ground. She had managed to grab him, despite the odds and the foul creatures that had tried to deter her. She was not a cruel lioness, though, no matter how enraged she was, and she would give him a quick end - no need to drag it out and be cruel.

That, and those damn vultures kept swooping down at her now that she finally had him. What a nuisance!

"This is the last mistake you are going to make, scavenger" she emphasized the word, as if to remind him just what his place was and that he should have long gone back to it. She had no doubt that these vultures were somehow connected to the interlopers - how, exactly, she wasn't sure, but they had shown up around the same damn time and they were going after members of the pride just as those annoying pests were.

She let her growl rumble deep in her throat again, ignoring as a sharp pain in her back told her a vulture had swooped in and landed talons upon her wound. Her hackles rose, her fur bristling and standing on end, and her eyes (so much like the eyes of her sister, save for that uneasy rage) bore down onto the bird. Her paws dug hard into his body, claws digging at his feathered frame and pinning it down. Then, letting that growl escalate into nearly a roar, her head whipped down towards him - aiming for his neck, to break and tear it, to kill.

(Fine by me, and sorry to be rushing this along, but it's nearing the weekend and we should start wrapping this up. XD)

(Sorry guys, I just wanted to add in one more post of my own, if that's okay. <3)

Ubele couldn't afford to be distracted, but she could not keep her eyes off of the cream lioness that had jumped to their defense. She looked so much like her own mother, and yet her nose told her that it was not. Rather, it was Ficha, her aunt. Still, the sight of such familiar coloring brought back painful memories of her mother and awakened the fierce worry that she had for Nyonda.

Near dropping from exhaustion, Ubele knew that there was little that she could do in the fight against the vultures. So, she merely tried to stay out of the way and out of sight of the birds. She attempted to think through her fear and confusion. She couldn't understand why the birds were attacking. Ubele knew of lions in the Aka'mleli that had bonded to vultures. So why was this group attacking them.

She stared up at the feathery masses, listening to their cries. Something about a king. Who was the king? Even more confusion. But they also said something about the cub. Were they targets. Her gaze found Ufunuo and saw that he was indeed the focus of most of the birds. Why were they after him?

So many questions and confusing thoughts. But one thing was certain. She would not let these birds hurt her brother or take her brother from her. Summoning any strength she had left, she stood with her brother. They would get through this together. Somehow.
