This is one little thing that has kinda bitten at me for a while. Yes, I realize that Tau has a shooty commander, but that is more because they can't melee, at least not most of the time as I've seen from the thread. Every other race's commanders, though, are all about melee based combat, which isn't all that much of a bad thing, but I'm just saying, "What ever happened to the guys who liked carrying around the really big guns?". Why can't they make a commander that uses a heavy bolter that shoots krak missiles and acts like a Rapid Fire weapon so he can move then shoot. I think that would be pretty cool...

Thoughts?

Simple. They aren't scared to run through bolter/plasma/flamer/venom/living organism just to kill you. In fact I think its all a psychological thing.

Yeah, there's that. But I think if you were getting shot at with large explosives at a relatively steady rate it would accomplish just about the same thing.

Chaos used to be able to have the Kai Gun. Str6 AP3 Assault 2 at 24".

Yup, though there was a limit of 1 per army.

The Grey Knights have the Psycannon. Str6 AP(3?), Heavy 3 36" or Assault 3 18". Ignores Invulns.

Brother-Captain Stern has a Storm Bolter, though he does have a Nemesis-force sword too. Inquisitor Lord Corteaz has a daemonhammer, but both he and Stern have two long-range psychic powers. One of the Daemonhunter Inquisitors also has a Plasma Pistol.

I get that they all do have guns or powers or something.

But why are there no commanders with a big, powerful gun?

Because Commanders need to be free to Command and overview the combat situation, and not be a dedicated heavy weapons specialist. An Ork Big Mek with Shokk Attack Gun is probably what you're looking for.

Maybe I'll just start up a Tau army.

If I ever get my Space Marines finished...

Tau is okay, but I have a friend that plays Tau. You basically form a straight line and you fire until the enemy is in assault range, then you fall back and continue firing.

This is broken up with twinked out Crisis Suits going in and taking out some stuff.

That's why I play Grey Knights.

What do they all get about them that you enjoy?

Every battle is a challange and they have more of a personality than Fire Warrior Number 94. Not only that, but they're pretty powerful too. The Terminators have 2+ save, you have to roll to see if you can see them. Eh, there's a whole bunch of stuff. If you really want me to go into detail I can 'splain in the Daemonhunter's thread.

I probably shouldn't say that though, because I want to play an army no-one else plays, so perhaps I should say daemonhunters are bad.

No, you shouldn't. I believe that none of the armies are bad, they all have their weaknesses and strengths. If an army is bad, then it's the person's skill at using the army.
I've always kinda looked at the demonhunters with some awe, but I've always like the look of the Tau and their super sci-fi look. I really only chose SM cuz I liked them too and they came in the Macragge set and my brother wanted Nids.
