I suppose eventually they will, but I will never get rid of my books. *pets her library* Technology is fascinating, but there is something so very sweet about holding a book. The way you feel the binding, the cover, the density of the paper, the weight of it. Smooth covers, hard covers, thick paper that makes you think if a page is this strong how strong is the world, thin paper as delicate as flower petals.. *content sigh* It's magic. A computer screen will never have that.

I have nothing to back up my belief that books will not be replaced by computers other than the fact that they've remained relatively unchanged for hundreds if not thousands of years.

If that happens, perhaps books will someday become rare again; treasured as they were before the printing press.

As intriguing as the idea would be, I could never go for it really. I have this dislike of sitting in front of the computer and reading for long stretches of time because you have to keep looking away since your eyes will get screwed up bad. I saw bloodshots streaking from pupil to the corner of my eye doing that. sweatdrop The pro would be that paper is saved, but I have a certain affection for books like SilverWings mentioned earlier in this thread.
Computers are taking over our lives so it is only natural that books soon follow.

Probably, but I have no evidence beyond the fact I see more people at their laptops at Borders than reading a book. That now over 1/2 of my assingments are e-drops rather than "hardcopy" and they came from e-reserves rather than texts. oh wait, guess that would count But I'ma never getting rid of my books

I use a bit of both. For actual reading, I shall always use books. But for D&D, I use both the books I have and sources from the internet, both of which are invaluable and probably won't be able to replace each other for a long time.

In my school, some teachers are giving us CDs instead of textbooks (The textbook is in the CD).
But I don't think they'll replace like...reading books. They probably only did textbooks onto CDs so we wouldn't have to carry so much crap in our bookbag.

Hard Metallic computers just dont have the same quality feel as a hardback paperbook or a thick volume of knowledge.

I hope not, no matter how hard they try they just can't duplicate the feeling of reading a good book. There already is a website where you can read books online.: www.literaturepage.com. I could see them computerizing text books though but not books read through enjoyment. If they do computerize they should still print books as a option however the price would likely go up.

A computer could never replace a book. It is just something that cannot be done. One reason is that an author could never earn enough money but posting them on a free site unless they charged it....even if they did not as many people would find out about it. Another reason is that people will read less and less if it is on a computer, UNLESS they can come up with a site that let's a person save eactly where they were in a book. There is my personal opinion. A computer will never replace books.
