Learning and progressing our ability to treat disease and save lives is good. People do tend to get upset about the value of human life, even if that human hasn't even developed into a recognizable fetus. My opinion is that its weird that we(myself included here) have no problem killing a chicken embryo to scramble up some breakfast but care much more about a mass of cells from parents we will never meet.
I think that life is important enough to protect and if stem cell research leads to protecting millions of people in the future, my opinion is that the cost is worth it. I also think that stem cell research is much less outrageous when the cells come from fertilization clinics who were going to throw them out anyway.
