Alright, in some ways this thread is meant to co-exist with character threads in here.

You don't just have to discuss your own characters. You can talk about characters from books you've read, films and anime you've seen, and games you've played.

What do I mean by "theatrical" characters?

Anyone who is dramatic in personality. It usually involves some kind of performer or someone who's flamboyant and ends up drawing a lot of attention to himself/herself. My pirate is one exampe of course.

Hey Mel! Does Jack Sparrow fall into this category? I haven't seen many characters that are quite dramatic but, I do remember seeing some on a sketch from Saturday Night Live back a few years ago when Chris Rock was on the show. Has anyone seen "The Proud Pattersons"? I think that was the name of the sketch and it was funny but not hilarious. mrgreen

Yeah, I'd say Jack is a theatrical character. It really includes anyone with a dramatic personality in one way or another.

Do you remember the line in the third film "At World's End" when he makes the deal with Beckett, and then a mast snaps on the naval ship? One of the other officers says something like "do you think he plans it all, or just makes it up as he goes along?"

I love that line!

It's a perfect line to fit with a theatrical character, because actors either work with a pre-written script or with complete spontaneity. If you've watched shows like 'Whose line is it Anyway?' you'll know what I mean. I think Robert Stiles is fantastic in that show.

I'm glad I wasn't off on that one then, he-he.

But gee, I haven't seen "At World's End" yet. I'll see it and get back to you. wink

But yeah, I've seen "whose line" and it's good but I haven't seen it many times.

BTW, what do you think of the guys from "Monty Python"? I barely saw one of their movies, the one called "The Meaning of Life" and it was very funny. Most of them are theatrical characters, wouldn't you say? mrgreen

Actually, it's Ryan Stiles, but yeah, him.

A character I would most definitely describe as 'flamboyant' is Ayame Sohma, of the Japanese manga/anime series known as Fruits Basket. He is always one to make me laugh ... lol

I'm a fan of the Scarlet Pimpernel, AKA Sir Percival Blakeney, Baronet. A wonderful case of a character hiding his identity as a hero by being flamboyant.

I want to talk about my pirate! But I really don't want to expose my work. sad

No wonder the name didn't ring any bells for me. I mean, Robert Stiles? Thank goodness Berz was here to clear it up, he-he. sweatdrop

It's too bad I've never seen either fruits basket or the scarlet pimpernel.

Too bad you can't talk about yer pirate without compromising yer work Mel. Don't worry, we understand... 3nodding

Best way to experience Scarlet Pimpernel is to read it, but there have been a number of movie adaptations. My favorite one is the 1934 adaptation starring Leslie Howard as Percy (he nails the whole character within a character thing!), but there was also a fairly good one in 1982 with Jane Seymour as Marguerite and Ian McKellen as Chauvelin which incorporates some stuff from some of the later books.

But, of course, none of the movies have the same ending as the one from the first book. It's just not cinematically heroic to save the day by being tied up and getting the crap beat out of you, I guess. sweatdrop

I love angsty stories, so I've always loved the True Ending of the first Pimpernel book. *grins evilly*

I adored the Anthony Andrews performance as Percy... Leslie Howard of course is the classic though.

The first time I saw the 1982 version of the Scarlet Pimpernel was in my history class ... Oh, man, it was funny! Cheesy and in ways lacking from the original book, but I liked his foppish ways, the silly poem he composed, and his "Sink me, m'dear." I got kind of addicted to Sir Percy and immediately ran to read the book.

Say, has anyone seen an episode of the Simpsons in which you can see Zorro beating Scarlet Pimpernel? And Scarlet Pimpernel is portrayed as some kind of coward who won't even fight Zorro. I didn't quite get how funny it was supposed to be cuz I don't know anything about the Scarlet Pimpernel. rolleyes
