Hey guys, I was thinking about joining jazz band next year and I have a few questions.
1) Is it fun?
2) Is it hard to learn sax?
Yeah, I play clarinet, but I was thinking about learning vibes (I can kinda play mallet percussion), sax, or piano (already know piano).

It's pretty easy to switch from clarinet to sax but if you choose to learn to play alto or bari you'll have to relearn your scales since they're in Eb.

Yeah, I play clarinet, but I was thinking about learning vibes (I can kinda play mallet percussion), sax, or piano (already know piano). i think jazz band is fun. as for learning to play sax it will be easy since you played clarinet first.(clarinets have an easier adjustment ability to sax then other instruments.) But if you go with the piano, you'll more than likely end up with a very important role in the jazz band. (ours had a major role so we got SUPER mad when he didn't show mult. times in a row.) That's the basic jiest of it.

milkshake52 is it easy to swich from flute to sax? or should i give up my dream of being in jazz? you don't have to give up on your dream. Flutes can jazz to. (I know i play the flute in my jazz band). So you can try asking to see if you can still play the flute in the jazz band. (there are cases where some famous jazz musicians put their instruments down to solo on a flute), if that dose not work, then the switch is just a little hard but only because you need to learn a completely new omesure, new figurings, and get use to a reed. but i wish you luck on your dream.

Jazz is so much fun. I went from playing the flute to saxophone, the fingerings are almost the same on most notes. The saxophone is such an amazing instrument!!!

clarinet to sax is an easy switch, it's just like playing in the second register all the time and the fingering for C is different, you should have no problem with it, and you won't have to relearn all the scales' fingerings, just what concert B-flat is on alto and bari sax (don't ask me, i play tenor and clarinet, nothing to relearn there)
