To begin with, I've been a member of the guild for, I believe over 2 months now; however, through my absence, I have been pondering over the vogue as well. Which brings me to ask whether I posted a thread over my difficulty in convincing my parents to let me wear the fashion of Lolita, I don't quite remember. Anyways, upon my return, I am thrilled to say that my mother is actually supporting me, she even plans on buying me a sewing machine, materials, and if possible, buy the dresses from the stores itself. Despite all of that, they still have several restrictions and disagreements with the vogue. D;

Either way, I'm happy over those news.

Moving along, I read and heard about how strict Lolita Fashion is; actually, I posted a similar topic in crunchyroll[idk whether any of you have one/read it]. During my conversations with other Lolita's, they gave me their ideas and thoughts. Overall, I wanted to see what your perspectives are, according to the "Rules of Lolita".

My final question, "So ladies and gentlemen, what are the rules of Lolita"?

Thank you, I think I'll be posting more threads and posts due to my absence, I apologize as well. :D

Well, technically, there are no rules of lolita, just guidelines. There isn't an army of BABY the Stars Shine Bright clad girls waiting around the corner to jump out and maim you with their parasols for not properly color-coordinating or wearing your skirt a little too high above the knee (though you may very well get a verbal bashing).

Personally, I dislike the idea of a fashion that has rules to follow. Fashion is about expressing your creativity, and that's awfully hard to do if you're follow a strict set of rules.

I know many fellow lolis will despise me for this, but I think lolita fashion is taken far too seriously. People should just experiment and have fun, without limitations. As long as the end result looks good and feels comfortable, it shouldn't really matter.

The rules vary from person to person, and from place to place. Lolita in the U.S. for example is much more strictly "together" than in say the U.K., Austalia or Japan. It's because of how fashion as a culture works here. Everything falls into stratified little boxes and that's where it stays because, in general, there are too many other things to mix it up with. For example, too many chains or heavy hardware and you go from gothic lolita to just goth. Styles here are less fluid from one to the next in the U.S. so it really puts lolita into a very cookie-cutter sort of shape. I hope that kind of makes sense?

The things I personally look for are the bell shape, good quality of materials and construction, and the right level of "cute" in the garment. For example, just because a skirt has lace doens't make it lolita or just because a blouse is Victorian-inspired doesn't make it right to wear with every outfit. Wearing those things in coordination with other items can make them work, but ... yeah. The "rules" are hard to describe, it's easier to just look at something and determine from there, for me.
