It's coming! Err, what do y'all think of it? Anyone have the races and classes and monsters and whatnot preview books? What do you think of the changes?

For instance, no more core 1/2 elves and 1/2 orks, but there's a big beefy lizard man core race. Each class will fit into an archetype: Leaders make other party members better, strikers hit things from a distance, tanks absorb damage, and wizards manipulate the battlefield. Everyone can deal lots of damage, and everyone has some kind of minor self healing.

Aggro may be core. But, then, the Monster Manual will tell DMs how things attack, so facing Goblins and Kobolds will feel different, which I think will make up for it.

Don't forget you'll also be facing Gnomes! And you'll be able to play as a Tiefling! At any rate, I like the software idea, but other than that... I really don't think 3.5 needed much improvment. I mean, other than skill additions, it did pretty well. Right?

3.x is a good game. In fact, I think it is the last game to be based on what Gary Gygax originally wrote. 4th is just using D&D for name recognition. Although with 15 years of Magic the Addiction and 7 of Dungeons and Dragons WotC should have some sort of its own reputation for writing rules...

3rd edition was a pain to keep track of. Only the most fanatic bought all the books. 4th will have 1 Players Handbook, 1 Monster Manual, and 1 Dungeon Master's Guide... a year. That will be easier than 15 different theme books.

Will Gnomes be like Kobolds except for evil parties to fight? If I'm running a party of Tieflings I'll need some good critters to mow down. domokun

Yup. D&D has reached the last legs of it's journey, unless the players can speak up and do something about WotC.

With the OGL, we don't really need their permission to save everything but the name. 3nodding

Yeah, but the name is nessecary, don't you think? Other wise people will regard it as a spin off.

Well, they already do. Castles & Crusades is about as true to D&D as can be, but isn't as recognized even insofar as D&D is recognized to begin with.

But, hey. Back in the day D&D wasn't a popular thing, it just filled a niche that many didn't realize exist. I figure it doesn't need to be popular to be good.

That actually looks interesting. Do you know anything about the rule set?
Like is it close to 2.5 or 3.5?

I don't know, I just found it while looking to see if such a project already existed.

Fourth edition is markedly different from the third edition because of certain aspects, such as giving wizards spells that are usable at will, once per encounter, and once per day. They are also giving warrior classes, like the fighter, tactical manuvers that work as activated special abilities.
