First of all, do you go to them?
And...second...what kind of crazy things happen at them?
I've only been to one, but we saw these two guys from another band...and they were handcuffed together... eek
It was the funniest thing I'd seen in weeks!
And...what do you do at your comps? At our state competition, we had to play two songs, and then go in and sight read another tune...
But we don't have to sight read for our next. (Thank god cos I can't sight read for crap on tenor sax!)

When i was in highschool we used to go to quite alot of jazz festivals. We actuially traveled waaaaaaaaaay more than the marchingband did.
Jazz festivals are really fun! The clinics with jazz greats and the performances by jazz legends are even better! Two of the big festivals i've had the pleasure of attending and competitng in were The Reno Jazz Festival and The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. My old highschool has won awards in both of these festivals.
I kinda miss the atmosphere of it all... The judges standing there talking and writing stuff down... The anxiety of knowing that if you play everything perfectly you could move to the finals! Watching other bands perform and seeing if they're going to advance or not. Making it the the finals is great too! The best of the lot up on stage playing again to see who will place where! And you cant play the same songs either! Then there's the band photo's! Gotta love the band photo's! Winning a soloist award is really great too! I still have all my old soloist awards collecting dust somewhere but still i keep them like a badge of honor. These are just some of the things i remember from going to jazz festivals.
these are just the general memories not the other things we did away from teh director <_<

We went to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, which is the biggest high school jazz festival in the country, I believe. It's mostly bands from Washington and Idaho, but there are some Oregon bands too, and every once in a while there are bands from BC, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. I went three times and it was a blast. Definitely some of my favorite memories, to be sure.
With the Hampton festival you take six songs. You have to have at least one ballad and one straight-ahead swing. The songs are numbered and right before you play they roll a die and whatever number comes up is the song you HAVE to play. So, say your list looked something like this:
1. Ballad (required) 2. Swing (required) 3. Latin (song your group is best at) 4. Rock/swing (song your group is worst at) 5. Blues 6. Funk
If you rolled a 1, that would be good. You already would have had to play your ballad anyway, so then you get to pick what your third song would be - in this case, probably the Latin song since it's your best piece. But if you rolled a 4, you'd be stuck with your worst song, which is a bummer.
Then you perform the three songs for two judges. The judges score your group in nine areas. 1 is best, 5 is worst. Then they add the two scores together. The best you can get is an 18, the worst is a 90.
You compete against everyone in your room, which usually means there's 2 winners per division except for smaller divisions where everyone can compete in one room. The winner for each division is announced at a special concert that night and they get to go play a song in front of everyone. They also announce runners-up and second runners-up (so second and third place).
