Well, I was just wondering: all you die-hard Queen obsessors in the Break Free guild (which, I suppose, would account for all of us): what do your parents/family think of your Queen interest/obsession/fangirlism?
Myself...well, I got into Queen because of my dad, but he's more of a laid-back, casual Queen fan--not really obsessed like I am. Also, his opinion of Freddie is...not exactly approving. After he'd been telling me for a while about Queen and how awesome they were, he was all, "Freddie Mercury...their singer/keyboard player guy...he was a f**, though." When I asked him whether he was using that term for what it really meant, or just as a general insult, he was all, "No, I really mean it, he was all...oh God, he was all...proud to be...homo....he died of AIDS."
My dad's not a bad guy, though. He's one of those fans who puts the music first, and when it comes right down to it he doesn't really care all that much about Freddie's sexuality. He isn't a die-hard Queen fan, though, so he hasn't really formulated an opinion on the other members of the band as much. He really got a kick out of it when I started learning all this crap about the band that he didn't know, but now I really think he's starting to find my obsession slightly creepy.
My mom is rather fond of Queen as well. She's heard A Night At The Opera and Sheer Heart Attack, and really admires Queen's creativity and experimentation. Like my father, she hasn't formulated an opinion on Brian, Roger, or John, but her thoughts on Freddie and my dad's thoughts on Freddie are as different as night and day. She basically said that she thought it was really cool how up-front Freddie was about the fact that he was gay, that he wasn't afraid to show who he was and all that.
I do know one thing: if my parents knew about my fangirlish tendencies towards Freddie, fairly often Brian, and occasionally Roger, they'd probably disown me or something. sweatdrop Mainly my dad. (Well, he wouldn't disown me; he'd probably just roll his eyes a lot, give me a hard time every time I mention Queen, refer to the members of the band as my "boyfriends", and just generally make the rest of my existence a veritable hell. mrgreen )
So...what do your folks think of Queen, or your Queen obsession, or your Queen fangirl/fanboyism? I'm curious!

My mom has gotten really into Queen in the past few months. She even looks for them when we go to music stores now, lol.
My sister has a couple songs on her ipod but doensn't listen to them all that much. But she will join us when my mom and I decide to have a Queen music video marathon. And she will throw out some Queen facts she's learned from me over the years, when ever she's in a musical debate with her friends.
My dad was into them since the beginning. My mom said he'd drive around listening to them all the time, much like I do now. I think he's the one that got me listening to them in the first place.
My boyfriend tollerates them. He does like some of the songs, but prefers the ones where Brian sings. He says Freddie doesn't sound manly enough for him. By the way, Metallica is to him, what Queen is to me. He did decide to burn us a Metalliqueen cd for us to listen to when we're in the car together.

oh, boy oh boy...
my dad used to think that Freddie was a great singer, but creepy and that they only had a few good songs out...after I started listening to Queen more and he was listening to them too, he started liking them too...he still thinks Fred used to bang David Bowie, but he still respects his voice and talent, especially when I told him about Freddie actually being shy...of my obsession? he patently listens when I jabber on, especially since he likes finding out random little rock facts...
my mom only realised that a few songs that she likes are by Queen after I told her...she had no idea who they were by, just that she liked them...of my obsession, she just rolls her eyes...my parents have no Queen CDs/albums, btw
my sis only listens to Queen cuz I do, and only like 5-10 songs...she thinks Fred was ugly, btw...
my bro also thinks Freddie was ugly, and that the whole band is/was gay...he still likes a few of their biggest hits, especially Bohemian Rhapsody and a couple others...he likes Brian's guitar
my friends sorta know who Queen are, and know WWRY/Champions of course, but they also roll their eyes at me...and they like Akon and Fergie and Rihanna and Nelly Furtado and Avril Lavigne and the Black-eyed Peas...

I have one of Metallica's albums, And Justice For All. The guitar work is very masterful, but I never much cared for their vocals.

That describes my situation almost exactly. Most of my friends, if they're into Queen at all, are only around "Greatest Hits" level fans--not that I'm the type of Queen fan who goes around pummeling anybody who doesn't own every album in the catalogue, but it can get kind of irritating after a while when I'm looking for someone to vent my obsession with.
Oh, and I'll change the question a bit to make it more general: what do people in general think of your love of Queen? This includes best friends, worst enemies, complete strangers, your dentist, that one idiot who kept jabbering on about how Another One Bites The Dust has a subliminal message in it endorsing marijuana...you name it!

My dad doesn't really care much for Queen. And my mom is a Greatest Hits fan, but she's cool about it. We've had a couple 'Wayne's World' moments, she'll turn on Bo. Rhap. and blare it and we'll sing along and it's really fun.
My friends think it's funny, but are now into Queen. A few know more than just the 'Greatest Hits', and will sing along with me in the hallways. xd In math class today, I was called to the teachers desk to see what math I'd take next year and they began to sing 'You are the Champion' (It's meant to be 'You'). So the teacher thinks we're all weird.
And I think I've started a little Queen wave through out school. People sre singing 'Bo. Rhap.', 'Another one Bites the Dust' and a few others which is cool.
And as for me, I love it!!

And here I thought I was so special because I announced Freddie's birthday on the first day of school...hence becoming known as the Freddie Mercury girl to pretty much everyone in my Algebra class. (I seriously don't think I'll ever get over how amazing a singer he was, man. biggrin )

These people just don't understand the grace of eating sloppy joes and listening to 'We will Rock You', 'Another One Bites the Dust' and 'Don't Stop Me Now'. (Isn't the last one ironic?)
Hah, on Freddie's birthday I wore my Queen shirt and ran around school singing and rambling on about whatever (no one could tell what I was saying). I scared the school because I'm usually very quiet and keep to myself. Then on November 24, I was sad and silent. Someone asked me if something was wrong, and I replied, "Freddie Mercury died!" The person knowing Freddie (her parents listen to Queen), said, "Ummm.... He's been dead for years you know..." So that went on for the rest of the day.

Funnily enough...I've never been really saddened by Freddie's deathday. I think it's sad that he died before his time, but it's not as if I fall into a little bout of depression when November 24th rolls around each year. Which is really weird, since I heavily admire Freddie and Queen, so you'd think I would be in the same boat as you guys. But for some reason, I'm not that emotionally affected by Freddie's deathday.
On a different note...you got kicked out of the lunchroom for singing Queen? Man...it really stinks how uptight schools are with their rules. Okay, I understand getting people to be quiet if they're bothering somebody, or shouting cuss words or harassing other kids, but singing? Come on!
Then again, it seems to be the mission in life of 99.9% of lunch ladies to make students' existence as boring and dull as possible. xd

xd And that wasn't the reason we were kicked out. I guess I shouldn't have confused you with the word 'singing'. None of us know how to sing at all. And it was the teachers instead of the lunch ladies. The lunch ladies are nice here, actually.

Yeah-I wasn't depressed...just a bit quieter and sadder...
lulz-the lunch monitors at our schools have no life except the five hours they put in per week watching over students who hate them...Ugh...they don't even let you finish your lunch before they come around telling you to put your garbage in the can...and then, they move it closer to you...I was sitting down, so it was like right in front of my face, so i told her that didn't like garbage in front of me when I eat, and I moved it back...everyone one loves pissing them off just to get the reactions
On the t-shirt issue-I'm gonna get a white shirt, and write on it ______from ______died today-RIP
and whenever a death comes around, I'm gonna write the name/band on a label and stick it on the shirt.

rofl I don't know why that bit made me lol so hard. Can you imagine? Wait. Nevermind. Anyhoo. My parents just roll their eyes when I gush about my obsessions, since they change so often. But... There is a reason why my circulating classic rock obsession comes back to Queen. It always happens that way. Like just last week, I was still in 'The Who' mode, but now my Queen obsession is back. I don't have many people IRL to gush about my obsession with. Most of those people are on the internet... When I visit my best friend again, I'll surely be able to gush about it. It's fun to listen to her vinyl of Sheer Heart Attack over and over, while steadily getting drunker. rofl
Oh wow. Ramble over.
