i've been in the school pit orchestra for the school musical for the past 2 yrs, and absolutely love it! does anyone else play in a a pit orchestra or have any funny pit-related stories to tell? for example-we had a chugging contest once between the director and the oboe-ist, the director throws food at us between songs sometimes, a friend of mine onstage almost fell of the stage into the pit at the end of a scene in which he was drunk...... sad

Oh god, the memories of pit....
In highschool (I'm a music teacher now), there was this one part in I-Forgot-Which-Musical where members of the cast leaped over the pit onto the mock-catwalk surrounding us. Unfortunately, during first week of rehearsal, one guy missed and seriously hurt his leg. After that, we would all grab our stands and shove the hell back towards the stage when they jumped.
In college, I was in pit for Mozart's The Magic Flute. Somehow, we managed to stuff the whole freaking conservatory symphony into that tiny place and play the whole opera. We wanted to die after each rehearsal. Heh, second night of the opera, my fingers got ahead of my brain, and during a dramatic recitative (not an official song, but where the actor sing-speaks his lines to drive the plot forward), I decided to play a tritone when the chord was suppose to resolve. I played it loud and for all to hear too (that's when I'm glad the audience can't see us to figure out who it was).
Also, the actor who played Papageno arranged for a trombonist to put a bottle of wine on the end of a pole, and during one particular song, hand it up to him while Papageno is trying to get drunk. It nearly fell on my head during a rehearsal.

This is my second year in a pit orchestra, and I love it. Last year we did How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and this year we're doing Oklahoma. I play piccolo and flute. 'Tis pretty awesome.
The best part of pit is sneaking backstage during intermission and setting up a joke for the actors. And laughing when anything goes wrong.
