Ok, for a concert last year I have to hit a high D and it was one of those "Hit it or this whole part of the song'll suck" kinda things. Well... I blew it... Ya, Mrs. BD wars not happy 'bout that.
Any advice? 0o'''''

It ain't that bad. Man you just gotta practice for stuff like that. I have to because of jazz band and when I play baritone.

If you mean the high D as in 5 ledger lines above bass clef... then yes... that's about the reasonable limit for any trombone player... The only way to get that solid is make sure to work your way up from the lowest high note (yes that makes sense) you can hit and warm up some high notes everyday.
But.
If you mean the D one ledger up from bass clef... practice more. Lots more. wink

my band director says to lift your eye brows up and it will make it sound higher... it works kinda..... but the best thing is to practice.....

It's true that you just have to practice a lot. When I got region audition music, it was hard to get up there at first. I just practiced frequently and can now play the notes just fine. Same with high Bb (way up there on the ledger lines). I've been practicing it and it's getting easier each time. Also, work on curling your lips and blowing fast air when you're playing really high notes. Remember to "e it up!"

As a fellow trombonist- just play alot. Have someone play the note on the piano and try to hit it- and keep on practicing. I hate high notes especially when a whole song has alot of them >< Lack of oxygen makes ones brain hurt....alot.

Ack! now that I'm in highschool it's like, no more mid notes?????????? I hate it... All the songs i play (second part for marching, first chair in concert, im a freshman, by the way) are entirely between on ledger and 5! but my chops are nice and strong now (they used to give out about.... the second measure, now its at the last exactly)
before you get to a high note part, buzz your lips, out side of the mouthpeice, or play an octave lower. This is my 4th year on trombone.

hmm, for lip strength, I would suggest practicing lip slurs. Simple easy ones, like B flat to F, and then back up at first. Then, work up you lips until you can jump two octaves or more, from say, the pedal tone B flat all the way up to High F. Try some long tones in your higher register, too. those really strengthen your lips! (

...and if you really can't get it after all those tips...hire a professional! hahaha! I'm totally kidding.
yeah, practicing a few minutes everyday helps for strength, and overall it just helps.

I don't ever want to be alone again...Lets see...
Do you mean the first D Note above the staff or an octave higher?
None of my music has asked for anything above a high F, maybe a high G. So I probably wouldn't be able to help you. lol ...Now that I have found a love that never ends.

It took a long time for me to be able to hit up in that range. I probably can't do it anymore *coughlazycough* but one of the worst things i could do was wait to practice the last minute before a concert. As soon as you get a peice with a high note, make sure you start practicing so you can build up your chops but not right before a concert. Its really tempting to try to make sure one more time that you can get that note, but its best to just save your mouth if you're still building up to it.
