Ellavemia's A Gift for the Guild thread led me to wonder whether anyone else has a 21+ Banner that they would like to offer for official use by other Guild members. If not, then perhaps we could create a contest so that users could compete to not only have their banners chosen but to receive some sort of material prize as well. Although something along those lines might already be in the works, I wanted to at least put forth the suggestion.

Teehee!! It's like you guys are reading our minds!! We've been talking about holding a banner making contest -we just wanted to wait until Earth week was all finished with (which it now is), and Christmas was over!

If there is interest in this idea, let us know, and we'll definitely go ahead with it!

I like to make banners so much that I think they could be rotating. So if there's a contest then maybe everyone could be a winner, just the one with top votes gets displayed first and so on.

There's no reason (in my opinion) not to show off everyone's different styles and if they're all featured on a page then members could just select the one they feel like "wearing" for their sigs and profiles.

Actually, if anyone is interested in writing out a basic "how-to" about all things banner, let me know! It'd be great to post something like that along with the competition rules, so that more people would be able to enter...

I can't speak for everyone, but for banners you pretty much need two things; a paint program and a flash program. As long as you have those two, you can pretty much create any type of banner you want.

A good place to get a free flash program would be download.com. They usually have free ones people can use.

As for paint program, even basic paint works.

After all that, it all boils down to creativity.

(Yay for wardriving work!)

I might toss in a few banners but not formally enter the competition. I am sure if I shuffle through my folders and folders of photos (yes, I have successfully filled a gig memory card) that I can find something I can use. It may be a stretch though. 3nodding

There was a web-based graphics application that was decent, but I forgot what it was called. sweatdrop

Since flash is a bit out there for me, I sometimes use Animation Shop 3 by the makers of Jasc Paint Shop Pro (which I think is owned by Corel now). But you don't have to get all fancy and animated necessarily...as dafthank said, you only really need paint. But if I could just remember the name of that dang application, because it was better than paint and you didn't need to install anything...

I have Animation Shop and ImageReady which are both animation software. I don't have or know Flash but the others work fine.
:this is the part where I drifted off to the photo post in my mind:
Altogether we have more than enough resources. If it's gonna be a yearbook, maybe there should be a yearbook committee to work on different pieces though.

I have Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady as well, but I am much more familiar with Photoshop at the moment. Although I have made a few pictures for people like Super Buick, none of them have been animated yet. So, maybe you could have 2 separate categories for people to submit their entries under in the upcoming contest. That would allow members to use both animated banners and still images.

Hey, that's a pretty good idea. I like still banners myself but for people who like the animations it's hard to compare the two.
