First: I hope the ''italics'' were noticed. Second: I don't like being refered to as ''Black'' just for the simple fact that I'm not black, I'm brown. I don't wish I was any lighter or hate my skin, I just feel that if I am to be refered to as a color, it might as well be my actual color. Even the darkest person I know, is not black. Now to my topic.
Has anyone noticed any major differences between people born, raised in Africa and people who were born and raised in America. Most folks I know call people from Africa, ''the Africans'' most of they're knowledge of Africans is they do braids, they're really dark, or they have aids.
My bf's mom is from my state and his dad is Nigerian. When I told my family about him, they said all kinds of ignorant things like, he wants five wives, he very dominant, or asked if he bathed.
But on the flip side, while not in person, I have read in many forums about how people from Africa feel, about Americans. Like the women are lazy, golddiggers, can't keep a man. They're dumb, disrespectful, the list goes on in bothways.
Anyone else have thoughts/feelings on the matter?

Well, I know that African Americans tend to have issues with other people of African descent from other places.

We're an African family here =] My parents don't have anything bad to say about anyone except there scamming relatives ^^" So This must be to a more ignorant type of people that think these ways about others. We're Ghanaians if that makes a difference.

I caught some of my family making ignorant comments about Africans and I'm quick to put an end to it. A lady at my church showed some pictures of her missionary trip to West Africa and when I reported back to my family, a family member asked "did they(the Africans) all have knotty heads." things like that is what is wrong with people of African descent on both sides of the ocean, making ignorant comments and perpetuating ignorance. It's sad because these same people who treat eachother like crap, you better not say anything bad about a white person because they'll be the first to tell you off.

On craigslist there is a warning about accepting pm from Nigerians, I thought that was a bit much, and a while back I saw a special about some Nigerians stealing idenities and what not. Teiko Dornor(my sig) is Ghanaian and I love her.

Text book answer:
African Americans still suffer today from the effects of slavery. Therefore, such events as mis-education, which causes ignorance, which causes animosity occurs on a people that were scarred from birth because of the color of their skin.
Africans do not suffer from the same type of effects of African Americans. They suffer from what African Americans have that Africans dont.
My Answer
Africans are some of the most beautiful people in the world.
AND CONTRARY TO POPULAR OPINION, Africans don't have problems with African Americans. In fact, they are very open and very welcome towards African-Americans.
But a couple things im tired of:
The ignorance of my fellow African American brothers and even I at times is what Immigrant Africans see when they arrive. They think "Black" is what they see on ******** BET. No. No. NO.
I was asked recently by an African, "Are u a ******?". My first emotional response was shock. I said no. I am not. Then he asked, "Am i a ******?". I said HAIL!!! No. U see, Africans will take up to what they see as society sees African Americans. Africans will TAKE UP to what they see AS SOCIETY SEES African Americans.
No. No. No. THats twisted and backwards. WE us African Americans should be lookin up to them. Their work ethic. Their struggle for makin it by. We listen to our bullshit Role Models Like Ludacris and Plies talkin bout "I Grew UP a Screw Up bullshit" and how "I Hustle all day" and "Im In Love With Money" and all that bullshit.
Yea we went through s**t here. And yea racism and s**t still exists today. But thats A b***h Excuse. And WE ALL KNOW It. Were on the verge of maybe gettin a Black President. How the ******** u gon say, " WHite Man gots me down. I can't be nothing." Im tired of hearing that from my lazy African Americna Brothers. BULLSHIT.
Im tired of it. We can learn some things from Africans.
I went to Haiti last year. Quick History Lesson: Haiti was the sight of the only successful Slave Rebellion. With the help of Maroons. Maroons were rebel run away slaves that lived in the mountains and hills of the island of Haiti. I met Maroons. And I was enlightened by their work ethic, their mannerism, and their ability to never stay emotionally down.
If u were to take a 5 Maroons (who look just like normal African Americans by the way) dress them in baggy jeans and white tees and mix them with 5 African Americans dressed the same way, I could tell the maroons from the African Americans, JUST FROM THE WAY THE STAND AND THE WAY THEY WALK. Maroons walk with their chests out, chin up, head high. Always.
We should learn from them. Africans. The People of the Mother Land. The Beautiful People.

No, that really applies to Australia more. Africa is a continent with many countries, each country having multiple cultures within, each culture having pride in itself. From what I understand (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, as I've never been to Africa sweatdrop ), people living over in Africa don't really like when the different countries are lumped together like states are in the U.S. It's like saying Europe is a country of its own but with states.

The tention between African-Americans and Africans comes from the damage white have done. Africans thinking they were better than "half-breeds" and us replying about their way of life.
A split caused by white people to weaken black unity, and when I say black I used it to represent all people of color at one time (jamaican, haitian, aborigines, etc.). The influence from white people isn't unheard of and in reality it isn't all their fault.
I have had African, Jamaican, and even Brazilian girl friends and all their families said stuff against African-Americans, but just like most problems, it all comes from people's ignorance.

People of African descent all of the world have to get past European exploitation. It's a shame that alot of "us" don't realize that media stereotypes are lies and that goes both ways. Most Africans I've met have been pretty friendly. Things would be alot better if people wouldn't expect the worse from others. I agree with you Majic, Africans are some pretty people...and that includes more than Eritrians and Somalians 3nodding

You know something I've been noticing lately? It's become okay to bash Americans so black americans (descendants of slaves) have pretty much become fair game. It's perfectly okay to stereotype us but we had better not say anything about anybody else. If an African or otherwise makes a comment about black americans being ghetto it's attributed to the fact that they're only exposed to us through the media. Well, many of us are only exposed to africans through a biased media so I don't think that's a fair excuse to take cheep shots at people from either side.
