Okeydokey, so I'm getting braces (and a tongue guard) in January...fun fun, right? xd So, does anyone know how hard it is to play a reed instrument with all this dental work, and how long it takes to adjust? We might hold a recruitment concert soon, where I'll have a solo, so I need to know how hard it'll be. ._.

It doesn't make a difference at all for me. It's perfectly fine. Except i have this thing on the roof of my mouth and i play a clarinet so i have to hold it out more for my teeth to be able to touch the mouthpiece.

It matters what insturment i played oboe when i got braces and chipped my reed everyother day, if you play clarinet it is not to hard but when you adjust your mouth will be a little sore but shouldn't effect your playing too much

My friend says there is no difference at all. She has braces and plays the clarinet just fine. C:

Uhm... Our bassoon player finds it hard so if you play oboe or bassoon it may be an issue...
Our clarinetist and our tenor sax with braces doesn't find too many issues....

Oooo. My friend had to play an instrument with braces, except she played trombone, and for the first week and a half, the braces would cut her mouth. Very nasty.

I had braces already when I started playing the clarinet. Because I learned w/ them on I was fine. However, when I got them off I found nothing changed with my playing, so I don't think it makes that big a difference. Your bottom braces may cut into your lip a bit, but apart from a little pain (suck it up, clarinettists are tough) your playing should be unaffected.
