So, what does everyone think about this one? I think it has got to be one of King's best. The thing that makes him a great author is that despite the setting he puts his characters into, the book is really about the characters themselves, their relationships, and the nature of humanity, etc. The Long Walk, I thought, was absolutely perfect in this regard.

The only thing I didn't like was the ending. I figured when I read it that it meant he died, except that the way it was described didn't seem to have any relevancy to the rest of the book. Thoughts?

Okay, well as far as I can remember, there's this government-sponsored game that takes place annually that young boys can enter (age 16 I think?). The game consists of nothing but walking. The point of the game is to be the last one left alive. If you slow down too much, you get a warning. If you stop, you get a warning. If you try to physically impair or help someone else also participating in the game, you get a warning. After you have received three warnings, if you screw up again, they kill you. The reason anyone would enter this game is because for one thing, it gets you a lot of honor and high esteem (even after your death). Also, the winner of the game gets anything he wants, for the rest of his life, ever.

That's basically it. There are some very intriguing characters involved, but you're going to have to read the book for that. smile

I thought it was a great story, suspenseful and you couldn't guess who would go down, or stick thuogh it. It made me think everytime I went walking with my dog that I shouldn't stop or slow down..just in case ya know?

Ooooh I just loved this one.

It was satisfyingly gruesome and suspenseful, the characters seemed well rounded...

It was a creepy plot. The whole idea of it was terrifying ^^

And I just loved the ending, from what I remember. It just left you there, and I just felt like screaming! I just had to know what was going to happen next. I really really like it when it's not a happy ending (I'm sadistic surprised ), and the way everyone just dropped off like flies... ooh it was book candy smile

I'm only halfway through this story, having been reading it last night at oh-dark-thirty in the morning, but I absolutely love it so far. At the same time, I want the main character to sit down and yet I want him to walk the others into the ground. Yeah!

Well it's been years since I read The Long Walk, and I don't remember a whole lot except the mood at the end. It is definitely one of his best works I think. I remember it having an eerie feel to it and was driven by an incredibly sense of fear for the main character.

...if I remember correctly lol. I need to find it again so I can read it again...*adds to list of books to buy*

It's been a while since I've read this one, but I thought it was pretty good. It isn't one of my favorites though.

I've never read this one but I think I'd like it alot. I haven't been getting enough time to go out to the library and read more..The whole idea of having whatever you want from walking seems interesting but I personally don't think I'd do it ^-^;
