Well I don't really know how to make a guide but We need one around here so I'm going to do the best I can. If you can think of anything that needs to be added or changed in this guide Drop me a line. Seriously I'll take any help I can get Thanks- Davis shadenhand.

Ok so I guess I'll Drop the Index here...

1. Guide to the forum
2. Poetry Vs Prose
3. Poetic devices
4. "Do"s and "Don't"s of criticizing.
5. Scams and Scammers.
6. Links.

I guess that'll do it... Let's kick this off shall we? Here goes nothing...

Labeling your posts

Well here's how it works In OP/L I figured maybe it could work here...

[NC]- No criticism
[CW]- criticism welcome
[CE]- criticism encouraged.
[C+C]- Comments and Critique.

Be sure to specify what level of criticism you want otherwise you may get your feelings hurt...

Example:
[C+C=Be gentle!]
[C+C=I like it rough!]

...maybe I should do this later.... I'm in a ... well interesting mood...
In any event you get the basic idea....

Now moving on....

Poetry Vs Prose

Ok first things Poetry uses poetic devices While prose does not. Prose infact is derived from the Latin word prosa, meaning straightforward. (I'm kind of a nerd about Latin). There is nothing wrong with Prose it just isn't poetry and I'd like to make sure people know the diffrence ... I'll get some examples up later... but for now let's move on....

Poetic Devices

Though I've never taken a class in poetic science I've learned a bit about how it works form

various places so here's a List of some of the basics.

Alliteration - The repetition of initial consonant sounds.
Example: Silently Sitting

Staring into Space

Assonance - The repetition of vowel sounds.
Example:Alone Alan

Ached.

Imagery - Words or phrases that appeal to any sense or any combination of senses.
Example:

tattered banners, and torn up flags Flew over body bags (visual)
The air reeked of Chamomile and sex (Olfactory/Scent)
The Bittersweet Taste of blood lingered (taste)
like a velvet Pill I couldn't swallow (Texture/Touch)
As the sun screamed silently into the hallow (auditory/Sound)

Metaphor - A comparison between two Unlike objects without using like or as. Often

forms of the "to be" verb are used, such as "is" or "was", to make the comparison.
Example: He/She is my life.

Onomatopoeia - The use of words which imitate sound.
Example: Boom! The door caved in.

Personification - A figure of speech which endows animals, ideas, or inanimate

objects with human traits or abilities.
Example: The moon cried out in vain

Simile - A comparison between two objects using a specific word or comparison such as

"like", "as", or "than".
Example: He/She is like the sun to me.

Stanza - a grouping of two or more lines of a poem.
Example:

On this dark and dismal night.
when every thing feels right.
I look up to see its only flaw.
the stars they're not there at all.

"Do"s and "Don't"s of criticizing.

Ok While I haven't seen any problems what so ever in this guilds Criticizing (aside from the overall lack of) I decided it would be a good idea to post this any way.... so here goes....

DO
Give constructive critisizim
Example:
Good Johnny
Well It looks to me like you could change _______ on line ______

DON'T
Be a jerk.
Example:
Bad Johnny
Dude your poetry sucks... you should go kill yourself!!!111!!2131@!!!!!

That's just not nice...

DO
Give complements
Example:
Good Johnny
I really enjoyed it. I especially liked the last line.

DON'T
Patronize
Example:
Bad Johnny
I Didn't read it.... but it was good!!1

(If you can come up with a better way to demonstrate patronization let me know...)

DO
be respectfull to others.
if you need an example of this... get out... just leave... no one will ever love you... jk jk....
Good Johnny
Well bad johnny While i don't agree with the veiws expressed in your poem I choose to respect it as a peice of art and you as an artist.

DON'T
be a troll...
Bad Johnny
STFU good johnny Your (insert racist/sexist/antisemitic comment here)

And always remember criticism should help some one grow... Not scare them away... watch what you say carefully as it can easily effect the future of others...

There that should get you off to a good start....

Scams and Scammers

First off poetry.com is a scam...
I myself have tested it with a poem called "ode to my *****" and well it came back published... Trust me they just want you to buy the book it's a "vanity" publishing company.

As learn more about scams and scammers I'll update here...
