The Last of the Timelords

That in the season 2 episode "Army of Ghosts," that the actor that plays Martha Jones in the 3rd season, is included as one of the computer workers? Has something like this happened before, was it intentional, or just a blunder on their parts?

^_^ Yeah. She was just an extra, then RTD liked her character so he asked her to come back as Martha. The character in Army of Ghosts is Martha's cousin who was killed in the battle.

Yes, it was known. Martha even mentions (in her debut story, 'Smith and Jones') that her identical clone from 'Army of Ghosts' is her cousin Adeola.

And, yeah, stuff like that has happened before on the show. Usually it's minor characters, but they've also had Nicholas Courtney playing Bret Vyon in 'The Dalek Master Plan' (1st Doctor story), and later becoming Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart (2nd-5th and 7th Doctors). Ian Marter played John Andrews in 'Carnival of Monsters' (3rd Doctor) before becoming the 4th Doctor's companion Harry Sullivan. And, of course, there's Colin Baker, who played Commander Maxil in 'Arc of Infinity' (5th Doctor), and later became the 6th Doctor.

Then of course there's the actor who played Feldwebel Kurtz in Colditz, Col. Brimmecombe-Wood in Sympathy For The Devil and The Wasting, the Caretaker in Scream of the Shalka, Daft Jamie in Medicinal Purposes, Galanar in Dalek Empire III and a Time Lord in Exile. I understand he went on to some prominance.

It happens backwards sometimes too - actors who've been regulars turning up in different roles later, like Jacqueline Hill who played Barbara turning up as Lexa, or Jean Marsh who played Sara turning up as Morgaine. If you count Sara as a companion, which everyone seems to for some reason.

I wonder who's played the most different characters in Doctor Who? On telly it's probably Michael Sheard. He's turned up as about six different people.

Ahh, but the best and in my opinion, most obvious one, was Colin Baker playing Maxil, and then playing 6th himself biggrin I loved that. Best way to get your predecessor's job, shooting them xd
EDIT: Just noticed, Maxil-->6th is already mentioned above. sweatdrop Oops!

Also, if anyone here has seen Torchwood, Naoko Mori, who plays Toshiko appeared in Christopher Eccleston's episode Aliens in London, playing a scientist.

Of course, lots of others I've noticed are already mentioned above mrgreen

What about Peter Purves (companion Steven Taylor)? He appeared in Flight Through Eternity (part three of The Chase, broadcast 5 June 1965) as Morton Dill, before appearing again as Steven in The Planet Of Decision (the last part of The Chase, broadcast 26 June 1965).

And if we're including Torchwood, Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) played Gwyneth in the Ninth Doctor story The Unquiet Dead and John Normington (Tom Flanagan in Ghost Machine) played Morgus in the Fifth Doctor story The Caves Of Androzani and Trevor Sigma in the Seventh Doctor story The Happiness Patrol.

One thing that always spins me out is when Big Finish take strongly established characters from the books but cast actors associated with other roles to play them in the audios. Katy Manning as Iris Wildthyme really doesn't work. Yet, oddly, Nicholas Courtney as Wolsey the cat really does. eek

How many of you know THIS. David Tennant was at the radio station doing one thing. When finished, he ran over to the Dr. Who radio broadcast and begged for a minor role. I forget the name of the character they gave him, but he was in.

Yeah, that's mentioned in the interview with him in DWM 375. He was playing the part of Dangerous Beans in a Radio 4 adaptation on the Terry Pratchett book "The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents". He found out they were recording "Shalka" in the studio next door and used his charm on the director Wilson Milam to get a cameo role.

Oh, and lemon, I mentioned that...

Not to mention that in the third season, Martha mentions her cousin who died in th fight with the cybermen, and I believe she said her cousin's name was Adeola, the character Freema played in Army of Ghosts.
