Sors

There are plenty of different ideas for how magic works in the literary realm and frankly it fascinates me in it's many forms.
In Harry Potter wands and words make magic.
In Tolkien's world magic seems to originate from the beginning and the earth itself.
From the Saga of Recluse magic is the Order and Chaos of the universe.
Sometimes it comes from the character's magical partner or from some relic they find.

Magic seems always to come from the soul though, never simply the body. It always defines the characters personality and thoughts.

What sort of magic "system" do you prefer?
Have you created some system of magic yourself?

In my book (Ametrisgoreaditnow) the potential to be a magi (doer of magic) is in everyone. There's a little core of pure magic that keeps you allive--like a soul--but it has a backup, hidden somewhere metaphysical in your body (you can't find it except with magic). This source is constantly vacillating between dark and light, black and white, all your life, but around the age of adulthood (14) it will choose a side, depending on what kind of person you are. Most people's will choose to remain a dark or light grey; they are undecided.

As for using it, anyone can, given the proper training. All you have to do is find your source and learn how to manipulate it. This is where the battle between black and white comes to play--if you're powerful and bad/good enough, you can be a black or white magi. Black magic kills all, destroys all, and gives you a pleasant cool feeling; it decimates white magi and white magic. White magic heals everything; it's a little weaker, but more persistent; it will hurt black magi and black magic but it takes a lot more. They're evenly matched for the most part.

Magic relies on emotions. You will it to your fingers and will it to change color (which changes function), will it in the right direction. What you want with all your heart, it will try to obtain for you. This is why stronger magi, the ones who use magic to fight mostly, need to always control their emotions. If they become too passionate, their magic can kill everyone around them, even themselves if it must rely on another source (meaning your soul or someone else's.) It's a huge committment. Most people just learn basic healing and how to conjure flame and all that, and stop there.

There's a lot of ways to fight with magic, use it in everyday life, and a lot of different branches--telepathy, possession, hypnosis, experimental magic. It is constantly being tested and tried for new properties. Currently top magi are working to prove the existence of grey magic, which could determine the very soul of the universe. Elves are more interested in this, as it supports their semireligious belief about the Great Root (don't ask.)

^^

Read it. Go on. You know you want to.

My magic originates from cookies eek

Eh, but really, I never put a ton of thought in where the magic in my stories originate... They seem to come from ancient spirits, that travel and exist in a dimension that's on the border of ours. There's maybe a 100 or so of these spirits that are worshiped, and thus the people are granted the spirits' powers when the right incantation is uttered. Without devotion or respect for the spirit, you can't be granted any magical power.

It goes something like that. My stories are more designed for humor, so I've never really put much thought into it past that sweatdrop

Ehh, I don't really like magic, much. People can't really use it. In the project I was working on, certain kinds of people could manipulate the elements (not the periodic table kind) through a sort of sixth sense that allows them to touch the natural world. It's all woodsy and folksy. But then I got ADD and decided to write about life, so now I guess fate is my magic.

What about you, Sors-sama?

Whoa, took me a long time to get back to this... sweatdrop

Kirby, gimme a link to your work. I'll certainly look into it, your system of magic sounds very interesting.
Voxxx, ya magic is easy to get distracted by, hard to developer properly. I have this super secrete really cool idea about how magic could work, like really work in the real work.
Be prepared, this has a lot of basis in string theory and advanced physics.

My magic system specifies that certain people are accidentally born with a little portion of space inside they're brain called an Undefined Portion. With in this space nothing is defined, everything is undefined right down to the thinest vibrations which make up the universe. A well trained brain however can "define" this space, use this little bit of undifinity within themselves to then "define" space outside themselves. So magic works on the most subatomic level and then builds from there.
Hence, only really intelligent people can use magic. Since they're the only ones the understand the changes they have to make on this undefined space in order to impact the universe at large.

I still need to thresh it out a little more though.
