I was the only real death note fan in my school until last year, when I met my friend, shunmaster. I thought it would be a good idea to show her the series......BIG mistake. Next time I saw her, she was and still is completely obessed with it. If you look at her page on deviantart
http://shunmaster.deviantart.com/
all she talks about is death note, she always clams that Light is rightous and stuff. I want to settle the arguement once and for all, is Light rightous? I don't think so, so don't believe what she said about me, I only said it beacuse their was a cookie at stake.

For this, I'm just going to repost my view, with just a few minor changes. (It's just that I don't have time right now but I hope this helps... 4laugh )

It’s true that L is considered as the antagonist of the story. I also admit that Light’s view of justice has a point. The problem though is his way of achieving this. Killing is an intrinsic evil, an act which is evil however good your intentions are.

It’s true that L’s ways of achieving justice is not all that good too. But at least I know that what he really wants is justice. You see, it makes me wonder if the real reason why Kira (or Light) kills is because he wanted a crime-free world. For some reason, I can’t help but think that he only considered his interests when he said he wanted that new world. He probably didn’t care much about the other people. He just wanted to be a god, and by killing those criminals, people would start looking up to him, worship him even. Which is exactly what he wants. Trying to "rid the world of evil", as he calls it, might just be an excuse for his real goal.

He then resorted to killing and betraying the people against him. Yet, those people are innocent and are merely trying to fight for their own view of justice. But to show everyone that he is INDEED a god, he devised plans to get them out of the way (a.k.a. killing them) as only an omnipotent could (through the help of the Death Note). He even used his own father for his ambition, not even stopping him from using the Death Note. When Yagami Souichiro died, all Light thought about was the death of Mello. In the end, the justice he had believed in was trampled by greediness. This makes him evil.

There ya go! Sorry if it didn't make much sense... I was only half-awake when I wrote that... sweatdrop

I don't see him as an evil person, he just has issues o.o
But I wouldn't say he is righteous either, no. Like SeraphicAssassin said, he is way more concerned about becoming a god, than abouth the people themselves. Remember when L said that if they made criminals arrestals (sp?) secret then Kira would start killing off innocents? There ya go. Not righteous at all.
