Run, Run, Burn By Underthered

Tama's Poem to her mother

I am not as alone as you’ve let me be.
When I close my eyes
I can still see
The footsteps that you left behind,
But I will not follow them;
They are not mine.

I can hold my head higher than yours,
For I held my own
And you can be sure
That I’ll never shed a tear over you
And the void that you left
When you came unglued.

I get no help, but I don’t need
No one to guide me
To the mouths I feed.
It’s me and my siblings, then there’s the world,
I need nothing else;
We will not be unfurled.

So walk, mama, walk,
Go run and hide.
You have left me nothing but a fire inside.
Yeah, go, mama, go,
Get out of my way.
I didn’t need you to shadow my days.

So here I stand, all on my own,
Awash in the wake
Of the nothing you’ve shown.
You’d be proud of me mama, I’m sure that it’s true,
For not giving up,
For not being you.

Can you hear me from where you are?
The fire still burns.
By the light of a star
I see the truth of all that you taught.
I won’t fade away
From these battles I fought.

Go run, mama, run,
Run as fast as you can.
Between us and you, can you put enough land
To forget your mistakes?
Do you see it all clear?
‘Cause the fire’s still burning despite you, here.

Making friends with shadows on my wall
All night hearing voices telling me
That I should get some sleep
Because tomorrow might be good for something

And it makes me think there must be something wrong with me
Out of all the hours thinking
Somehow Ive lost my mind
