To function well in the Extended Discussion, there are a couple things it pays to know. We'll try to write up concise summaries of these varying topics- in the meantime, feel free to ask questions, write your own informational threads, or chat in the chat forum (which is coming soon.) We're kind of by-the-forum-for-the-forum, so if you see a thread that interests you, volunteer to write it. If it's not present, suggest it, and then write it. That way, we all benefit from you knowledge.

A strike indicaties a topic has been written- topics in progress have their authors names next to them, so unclaimed and unfinished topics are easily visible. Here are the things we'll be getting to:

- Logic (Witt's got this one)

- A directory of major ED threads, to avoid posting repeats

- Extended Discussion ettiquette

- Notation and shorthand

- Set Logic and Boolean System (lawtonfogle)

- Relevent Satire (AnarchoManiac)

- Determining the validity of a Wikipedia source (AnarchoManiac)

- Insult vs. Statement (writercxvii)

- Debate presentation (faolan)

- 'How not to get your a** kicked' (SouthernCross and Ythan)

- Beginner guide to philosophy (Rookherst)

- Playing Devil's Advocate

- A subforum for fallacy topics

- How to keep your temper (Lord Setar)

- Seeing from the other point of view (InkRaven)

- Introduction to Economic Theory (Intriguing)

- Burden of Proof

- Acknowledging Strengths and Weaknesses in Both Sides (-epic!insomnia-)

- Determining source validity

Suggestions and brainstorming go here.

Sorry to see that you were banned...
If you consider basic economic theory to be a good topic to cover, I would be happy to provide some information...

On notation and shorthand-- what kind of notation and shorthand are we talking? Shorthand like the actual method of writing, or abbreviations and acronyms?

Abbreviations and acronyms. For example, basic things like OP (opening post/poster), DA (Devil's Advocate), and so on. Thread vs. forum, post vs. thread, and whatnot.

Of course, if you'd like to do a thread on actual written shorthand, that'd be cool, too. Although, it might belong in the Splatterfox forum.

Haha, I don't know shorthand myself, but my mother does. Thanks for clarifying, though. I've only recently come back to gaia, so I'm not familiar with all the terminology yet, else I'd gladly compose the thread.

Can I expand what I want to do simply to something like common misconceptions? Which basically boils down to how to look like you're smarter than you are, but it would still have insult vs. statement in it.

Also, where would you want me to put this one?

Sure, and slap it in the main forum. Just make sure DizzysBoyfriend or myself haven't already covered any of your material in either of our threads on general debating.

Something on spotting trolls and dealing with them might be good, but that could be too close to keeping your temper. Though I guess it could be different if the latter focused more on remaining calm during intelligent debates.

Dealing with trolls might be too simple a topic, but it's just something I thought could be helpful. Sometimes I'm tempted to respond to them when they really get me annoyed or they really don't know what they're talking about.

Also, do you think I could work on something about acknowledging your own limitations and others' strengths in a debate while still having a clear point?

I'm not certain what you're looking for, but I'm putting my ideas out there.

I think the ED Ettiquette thread, Tips for Debators, and the soon-to-come Keeping Your Temper thread should all deal with troll-spotting enough to be effective.

Something on strengths/weaknesses and noting them during debate would be excellent. Let me know the title, and I'll stick it on the list.

You May Be Right, I May Be Wrong could be a title for that.
If that sounds too ambiguous, Acknowledging Strengths and Weaknesses in Both Sides might work.

While the Logic topic is taken, I would be to contribute to it if the assigned person wishes.

I am good with Dialectic Logic (Hegel, Marx) and the contrasts between it and Aristotelian Logic.
