Who is your favorite Muse?

Here are the 9 Muses, for those of you who don't know
Calliope (Kalliope), is the Muse of eloquence and epic or heroic poetry
Clio (Kleio), is the Muse of historical and heroic poetry
Erato, the Muse of lyric poetry, particularly love and erotic poetry and mimicry
Euterpe, the Muse of music and lyric poetry
Polyhymnia, the Muse of sacred hymn, eloquence and dance
Terpsichore (Terpsikhore), the Muse of dancing and the dramatic chorus, and later of lyric poetry (and in even later versions, of flute playing)
Thalia, the Muse of comedy and pastoral poetry
Melpomene, the Muse of tragedy
Urania (Ourania), the Muse of astronomy and astrology

My favorite is Urania, but I like Terpsichore a lot as well, because I love to dance. Books, dance, chocolate, and myths. My life in a nutshell. biggrin

is that because tradgedy usually has death and then thanatos comes along and nyx and erebos are related to death?

I was wondering-some people count Orpheus as a Muse because he was the son of a Muse. What do you think?

Well, that's an interesting theory, but it doesn't quite pan out. Mousai (Muses) are female, and goddesses. Orpheus is neither, though he was an exceptional performer.

See, I agree with you, but many others disagree, mainly because,for example, Athena's father was male, and a god, but she's also a goddess.

*grins* Athena is a goddess because both her parents (Zeus and Metis) were deities themselves.

Orpheus, however, is the son of the Mousa Kalliope and the Thrakian King Oiagros, thus he is only half-divine; a demigod. It's actually an ever-present trait of Classical heroes, being half-god. (except for Odysseus, but he's more an example of a trickster myth rather then a heroic myth. Plus, he is the grandson of Hermes, I think.)

Euterpe and Thalia are my favorites, the Muse of music and lyric poetry and the Muse of comedy and pastoral poetry. Poetry, music and laughter what a wonderful combination.

1.) I'm writing an epic poem, and I want to give her my uttermost thanks
2.) She's the muse of muses and epic poetry, what's not to love?

How is it pronounced, anyway? I say Kah-LY-o-pee, but I've heard KA-li-o-pay.
