What do you all think is more important when it come to first chair? I got 2nd because my tone wasn't as good as hers, but I can play louder than any of them and can play my 2nd and 3rd register notes cleaner than any of them. Which do you think should have a greater role on chair placement?

Better tone or the ability to play high notes cleanly (like crazy high!)

Sorry buddy, but I wanna say tone. Definately the tone. You can work on the notes later, but tone is the main thing. =P

Sorry, love, but in a clarinet, tone is veeeeeeeeeery important. After all, it just sounds like an obnoxious duck playing the kazoo when it isn't in tune. And no one likes Duck-kazoo solos.

Indeed, tone is super important not only for clarinets, but for every other instrument as well. If you're out of tune during a solo or a clarinet soli part, it will mess other people up, and that's not fair to the rest of the band that have to listen to it.

if you're playing dirty disgusting high notes, then don't you just have bad tone in the high range? newhom, I'm a flute player and personally, clarinets with bad tone kill my ears, but I like to hear clarinets with good tone throughout a large range of notes, high or low

Tone deffinatly. You have to think what it means to be first chair, that person would get any solos in most bands right? Well when you're by yourself proper tone is much more important than playing "crazy high". Remember too, louder isn't always better. Also keep in mind that very few peices that a band would play use the third register on the clarinet for long.

I think, as stated above, tone is the most important factor in most any instrument. I mean, it's important to be able to hit the notes, but that does no good if they sound horrible. (I'm not assuming you sound horrible, just making a point)

And, also, how loud isn't really important, but rather control of your volume.

Tone > Playing high notes
But having no sound and having the high notes sound bad is bad...
I guess to boost your tone make sure you use your diaphram rather than your throat (Blow on your thumb and it will all make sence)

Tone, TRUST ME, I know this from experience, back in seventh grade I was horrible with tone [till I go a knew clarinet teacher], I never got close to first chair because of this, I had the style and everything though. Then in eighth grade my tone improved immensely and I was first chair, and in one of the top in my honor orch [the judge commented on my tone biggrin ]

so...

its tone.

Why? First parts, first chairs are truly important when it comes to melody lines, solos, second parts are honestly ten times more important than those who have first parts because they they have the lower notes, adding more structure and color to the timbre of the ensemble. Its what gives the ensemble the dark toned that is desired.

So getting second part isn't so bad, they don't know it, but your ten times more important, and its good your on second, if you have a wide dynamic range then it helps the timbre [again, second parts, more important, they need to be more louder than the firsts most of the time]

and playing loud isn't the most essential thing, playing loud with great tone is a great quality smile

[[update]] do you really want to be first chair? Go do 5 interval long tones starting from low E, tempo 60, half notes [last note is a whole note], do it everyday and your tone will improve immensely.

Trust me, this is a good little trick. I did it everyday when I learned bassoon, and getting good tone out of a bassoon is just as important as getting good tone out of a clarinet, and I was first chair bassoon in not only our highest level band but also in full orchestra and first chair in both my all city orchestras. It's a wonderful little daily excersise. Work it into your daily practice.

I would have to say both on this one... Tone is very important for any chair, but if its just the two of you and the first chair can't play the notes on the page then you cant really play first parts...
I know clarinets dont have this problem as often but my band has 3 trumpet plays and none of them can play above a middle C which means none of them can play first parts...
