Somebody just sent me an invite on Myspcae that explains it pretty well: Quote: October the 24th pro-lifers all over the nation will engage in a silent protest against abortion, completely ignoring the truth behind the need for choice to stay free and legal. Visit their website for more info. This is my challenge to ALL pro-choicers to stand up for choice that day and make their days goal to stand up for choice. Whether its a donation to your favorite pro-choice org, standing up on campus to speak for choice, wearing your favorite pro-choice tshirt, or joinging a peaceful demonstration for choice. STAND UP FOR CHOICE TODAY, OVERPOWER THE SILENCE WITH POSITIVE IMAGES AND MESSAGES FOR CHOICE!!! Also, the day of silence people will be wearing red duct tape over their mouths and/or red arm bands. I encourage all of us to band together by displaying a blue arm band with the word CHOICE written on it. Yeah.... I'd also like to mention that it's basically a total ripoff of GLSEN's Day Of Silence for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning youth. So I'm double mad. Anyway, share ideas and thoughts on this here!

Yeah, I noticed that. Way to be ******** original, lifers.
I guess the defense would be that they're protesting the "silence" of the aborted babies in the face of their oppression. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they said. So many of them have a knack for ignoring biology.

Hm. I might wear the armband not that anyone would know what it stands for. But if i lived in the states I would definately go protest and/or donate. 3nodding
OHOH I just got an idea. How about we use blue ductape and put the word Life (or My Life, My Choice) on it. As in choose to let the women live their lives how they want.

*nods* I think that's their explanation, Ernie. It just makes no sense. GLBTQ people, especially teens, are silenced by society. They can't talk about who they are or their relationships freely because they're afraid of being harrassed or worse for talking about it. Society is silencing them. Fetuses are silent because they are physically incapable of speech or even understanding what's going on. Nobody's silencing them out of hatred or phobia.
If anything, this day only silences women who have had abortions. Society silences them by stigmatizing abortion, which is still way more taboo than being gay or bisexual. These women can't speak about it because they fear being harrassed for the choice they made. The lifers are the only ones silencing anybody.

I dunno if I'll do anything. Probably say something if I see someone with the armbands... but I doubt I will, just cause of where I live. I just live in an area that's so pro-choice, that, well, there isn't any danger to choice rights on a local level here. Only what the Feds do can endanger choice rights here...

i was wondering why there were people wearing red tape over their mouths all over the city around this time last year. all i did was flip a bunch of them off as i drove by. confused
my friend has wanted to protest for a while, i'll have to let her know about the 24th. using the GLBTQ community's idea of the day of silence is really inconsiderate, especially considering the close mindedness of a lot of lifers. they're just a pack of ******** morons.

I suppose I'm not the only one who's wondering: how the ******** are they gonna manage it? They're completely vocal and outspoken the rest of the time. Stand around outside clinics with red duct tape over their mouths? Anyone going in would probably just be like "bunch of weirdos...". On the plus side, it would be a good day to get an abortion, since they can't scream at you. >: D
Yes, I noticed the whole ripoff as well. Bastards. I will remember the wear blue on that day, even though there is little to no threat to abortion rights here in the UK. I will do it for you guys!

Just remember, there's always stuff like Women on Web who (Much to the horror of lifers, I'm sure!) are proud of their abortions. And we could always get shirts from Planned Parenthood! They also have 'Save Roe' armbands and 'Choice' ones, too. ^^

I fear (or rather, I'm glad) there will be very few people in my town with the red bands. The whole city is SO liberal.

The opening quote on the Day of Silence/Solidarity website is so self-contradicting it's almost funny, TALKING to someone on a Day of SILENCE. Isn't the whole point not to talk? Well, whatever. Their whole protestday thing is unoriginal and contradictory.
The website also says it's the 23rd, not the 24th.
But yes, I'll probably wear a blue armband, or just blue if I can't find something armbandy enough.

Oh wait. Was it not supposed to be interpreted like that? Well damn, I guess I'll just have to be extra loud and proud. Let's put a spin on this; Oct 23rd. The day REAL WOMEN are heard.

Nggghh... I hate seeing people rip DoS off for "causes" like this. If I have to buy a t-shirt and scrawl "pro-choice" on it in black sharpie, I will.

Right before my birthday too. O.o
I don't think I'll be seeing much of this around my area, considering how pro-choice it is, but I might be making myself an armband that day...
