Safiya opened her eyes to the soft early dawn light and a strange shuffling sound in the distance. She had been drifting in and out of dreams for a while now, but the combination of those two things told her it was time to get up for good.
Climbing to her feet, Safiya ambled over in the direction where she heard the sound. It had been soft, and non-threatening, so she didn't feel any sort of danger going alone. Besides, who could feel threatened in such a peaceful, beautiful time of the morning? Safiya loved it liked this; the few moments in the morning when the world was just starting to awaken - the few moments when the world was cool, quiet and peaceful. It was a fleeting thing, the tranquility of the morning, but Safiya savored the moments when she could.
The sunrise was beautiful, not yet glaring or scorching, but gentle - and by its light, Safiya found her way, following the scent of a fresh kill. Her new friend Moyenda was not among the resting group around her, and so she assumed that he had risen early and gone hunting.
It was not long before she came upon him. Strangely subdued by the ambiance of the half-awake day, she blinked at him with sleepy eyes and spoke quietly. "Good morning, my friend. Did you wake early to greet the sunrise?"

"Well, your luck must be better than mine, then," Safiya returned. "You're just being modest. But that's alright. I'll choose to believe you," she said, half teasing. "You ate grass? I never thought of that. I tried scavenging... but I was so small, vultures always chased me away and hoarded everything for themselves."
It's funny...Safiya had only just recalled that fact. Almost her entire childhood was lost in a fog, and she had never tried to peer into that nothingness until now.
"Somalia?" Safiya tried out that word, but it was unfamiliar. The more she listened, the more sympathy was expressed in her face. "I'm sorry about your mother, and that's terrible of your siblings to do such a thing. I don't think I knew anyone affected by the plague - I've heard such horrid things. Perhaps that is what took my parents." She shrugged. "But I can't remember."
"So did you not have a father, or anyone to take care of you at all? What about your pride, did they help?" Her heart went out to him, the more she learned. She had not met many lions with a past similar to hers.
"Oh...me?" she asked, as though she had never considered it. "Well...um..." Try as she might, no images of her life before the graveyard surfaced in her mind. "...I'm not sure."

Safiya wasn't quite sure what to make of his...royal-yet-non-royalty. She eyed him curiously for a moment, but then realized that if he didn't care about it, she shouldn't either. "I met a king once...well, a former king. He was old and sad. I thought I could make him happy again...and I thought I would be able to have a new life there, but..." she trailed off, not wanting to remember how terribly that little adventure had gone wrong.
"Oh, yes, the vultures." She shuddered. "I had nearly forgotten them. But hopefully they will be gone quite soon."
"I know I'll love it, no matter what. It will be a home, and that's something I've wanted since I was a little cub. I've never had a home except for this horrible graveyard full of old bones...and that wasn't really a home at all. Anything will be better than that, I just know it."
Her curiosity was still not abated - she found herself wanting to know everything about Moyenda. Breakfast forgotten, her entire interest now was in this tan male. "Did you travel much? Did you enjoy it? I did a little bit of traveling, but never saw anything remarkable or met anyone that I liked...well, until now, that is."
