Yo everybody, haven't been back for awhile. It's college, what can I say? Anyhow, I've been learning Muay Thai, and given the fact I'm taller than average, I generally tend to keep my opponents at a distance. However, I want to use the clench more, and motion alone isn't getting me in close enough, any suggestions?

First of all, where have you been learning? Don't tell me it's off a book or video. But if you're actually training MT, reach to clinch as you would a short punch. Hard to explain but watch when I clinch right here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7Rh84Mj3vQ8I only reach out for the clinch AFTER he hits and ONLY in close range. Clinching should not be done unless you're in REALLY close range. Don't reach out with both hands and don't be slow about it. The clinch is ******** COMPLICATED. You need to do it until you develop the feel for it. And if you're not training at a gym, you'll never get it.

Tatsuya_Kawajiri Don't kick, kicking is for girls and faggots. Huh, and i always thought muay tai kicks were some of the most devestating because of it's technique. Id like to see you say that to one of my instructors, he'd break you in half little boy. twisted My best suggesting for muay tai is to not get hit. xd Im mainly a tae kwon do practicioner but have studied the basics of many other styles of martial arts, and i can say from experience... MT kicks hurt like hell. xp

Tatsuya_Kawajiri Don't kick, kicking is for girls and faggots. Yeah, because submission wrestling/BJJ isn't the most homoerotic style out there.

Im not one to be so bold as to say im better than someone i dont know though, you never know what will happen when you do that.

So maybe I pop wood when I roll with 13 year old japanese boys. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that... they're built like 8 year old girls, what can I say.

I clench alot in a scrap. gives good leverage and allows the delivery of a devestating knee strike, or as is the situation in a bar throw them into things or someone and deal with next comer.
as for kicks being gay, thats just stupid. The Legs by far have the most complex and developed muscles of the body. The Strength in your legs even if not used for kicks in alot of martial arts are used for momentum and energy to deliver in a punch or other hand strike.

Dante Reaver Soul Fighters Leg Kicks You guys don't know s**t about the clinch It's not that simple - It's VERY complicated care to elaborate on how complicated it is so I can laugh at how exaggerated you make it out to be? Proof: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BuCMdt_NUuEA clinch isn't something where you just grab somebody and they let it happen. It's a constant struggle for position. It takes more energy than ANYTHING else. When amateur fighters gas out, they're not tired because they're punching and kicking, they're tired from clinching. If you don't train the clinch often and don't have the conditioning for it, it'll only work AGAINST you. Against guys who don't know the clinch, I kill them. But against guys who do know the clinch, can't do anything. Also, clinching isn't just about getting two hands behind the head. If your man's taller than you, it's hard. You can use a seatbelt grip where you got one around the shoulder and one under the armpit, or a lower back grab, or grab them right under their armpits. Now once you're done worrying about the actual clinch, you gotta worry about range inside the clinch. Range is different for straight knees, for side knees, and for elbows. I personally have not dealt with elbows, so I'll avoid it. If you don't do Muay Thai and think you can clinch with somebody who is experienced in clinching (even a wrestler), you're gonna get raped.

well when you put it that way your point is made, but I'm not an idiot and understand your point. As I kinda suggest I'm a brawler, and a very mixed one at that. Last Time I clinched sombody I suplexed them into a table. I would also like to say holding a clinch isn't something you should do. I'd act immediatly out of one to do something either unexpected or completely damaging.
