Why do the books that we have to read for school or over the summer have to be so awful? scream I've just finished reading The Scarlet Letter for english, and it was miserable. The only thing that I ever read for school and liked was Macbeth. Any theories on why we have to read the most terrible books? I think the teachers just like to make us suffer. 3nodding

I tried to make a decent topic...

No, teachers don't make your read classics to torture you. They make you read classics because they're usually excellent stories (once you get past the archaic language and syntax). If you absolutely cannot bear to read classics, I would suggest reading the stories in the classic comics format. You get the same story, in modern english and in comicbook format.

I've read Moby d**k, and Fahrenheit 451. And in my opinion The Call of the Wild and White fang are classics. I've read those also. So is 1984 by George Orwell.

I don't mind the language at all. I actually like it. But I STILL don't like most required readings.

You have apparently never read "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond. Not a classic. And it's not fiction. It's PURE TORTURE. And it's not in old, archaic language with syntax. It's very recent, actually. I have to read it for AP World History, but I wouldn't be surprised if some English teachers made you read it, too....

I don't think I ever actually read the required reading for my english classes... any of them... and yet some how I still passed... and with a good grade... *shruggs*
I think in my entire high school career I read about 6 of the required books (only the ones that caught my interest) the rest of the time I read what i wanted.

I loved White Fang, The Call of the Wild, and The Sea Wolf. Jack London is amazing. heart

Wrong. I have read "Guns, Germs and Steel" and, like you, loathed every page. But it's not a classic, is not generally considered a classic, nor is it generally considered to be fit for use in the public schools (at least in my patch of the world most history teachers consider it a piece of crap). I spoke to the AP History teacher at the school I'm at and he said that book is very rarely assigned and usually only thrown out by football coaches who are too busy with their playbooks to bother with their history classes for a couple of weeks.

I am in 9th grade Pre-Ap English, and so far, through middle school and my month of high school, I have read several classics that surprisingly, I enjoyed. Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Mobey d**k, 1984, Farhenheit 451, and White Fang, just to name a few. Out of all of those, none of them were overly horrible, and the only reason I hate Animal Farm now is the fact that I had to read it over the summer and do about a gajillion things on it for my pre-ap class.

You have read Moby d**k? eek *bows* An enourmous feat, brava! biggrin

Knowing that it was written during the Romantic period of literature (The Scarlet Letter) it has to be difficult to read. sweatdrop

I forgot about Lord of the Flies, that was a truly great book.

I just had to read Peter Pan for English. Oh God, that was the hardest book to read. I have no idea why. I think it was written in near old english! lol I mean, I could understand it. But still, it seemed like the writer was trying way to hard to be clever.
PostPosted: Tue Nov 20, 2007 4:35 pm

Well I didn't really have to read any of those books, except for an excerpt from Macbeth. At least I think it was an excerpt anyways. I tried to take the easiest english class I could. You see I can spell and read, but writing is a whole nother topic.

I really think teachers go about assigned readings horribly most of the time. In my high school english classes we ended up going over the works so much that I got sick of them halfway through the discussion. There's only so many days you can discuss the symbolism of heart of darkness...
