I'm a spinner! I spin mostly on a Kromski Prelude that I bought in September, but I do have a drop spindle that I learned on initially. I think I much prefer the wheel because it's faster and much more comfortable.

A friend of mine has Kromiski Polanaise... she bought it with out ever trying a wheel and is not very cordinateted with a spindle. She bought i tun-finished and finished it her self. Shes been doing pretty good with her spinning though.

Kromski wheels seem fairly popular.

The Kromski wheels have great workmanship, and they're so pretty. Eventually I'd like to get a Sonata to have a more portable wheel.

I bought my Prelude already finished in Mahogany. I didn't have the means to stain it myself, and I think I'd be a little afraid of ruining it. The Mahogany is gorgeous as it is. I wish the Sonata came in Mahogany, and I hope it does by the time I'm really interested in ordering one.

I learned how to drop spin about a week and a half ago. It's a lot of fun. Though I can't spin while my mom is home and I can't spin inside the house. Mom's allergic to most natural fibers. sweatdrop

I was thinking you might want to look into getting some of the non wool fibers available to try spinning. Cost Varies and nothing is as afordable as wool that I'm aware of.

Try Etsy.com to find some things like soysilk, bamboo, silk, silk noil, There is a book called No sheep for you. http://www.interweave.com/knit/books/No_Sheep/default.asp If you can get ahold of that it might give you ideas for fibers you can use at home. ACPL prolly has a copy in their stacks.

I just started spinning. I've done a small skane (1.7 oz/24 yds) of alpaca, which I also dyed with koolaide, and today I spun a 3/4 bag of cotton cosmetic coil (I'm broke and was desperate for fiber. Can you tell?) It yielded about 9 yards of yarn that wasn't worth the hassle of spinning it. Once I get paid, I'm going to order some more fiber. I'm allergic to wool, so I'll probably be sticking to alpaca for a while, though eventually I'd like to start working with silk. Plant fibers seem somewhat intimidating, however.

Silk hankies are very easy to spin. I don't know what the pricing is for them. I would think that undyed ones would be fairly inexpensive, however.
