I'm writing a paper for school about abortion, but it's kinda hard... I'm up to page 165 in The Abortion Debate in ED, but it's getting kinda annoying researching there, because certain people are very annoying. I'm looking at you, pro-lifers. (Some are waaay more thick-headed than others.) Though, that topic is a lot better for research, because I get to actually see both sides of the debate go at it.
I'm kind of lost as to what I should write... I've never really done anything this in-depth before. So, if anyone has any ideas or anything, I'd be grateful.
...Yeah. Just thought some of you might like to know.
And, vote in my poll..?

I wish my professors in college would have not ruled out abortion as a topic we could write on. I would have loved writing that, and could probably right a novel on the topic. I would read what Talon-chan wrote in the OP, then find the sites used to back up stuff. I think you could get a fairly solid paper out of that thread.
I would personally start with the reasons people are against abortion, religion, misunderstanding of the law (like the use of the word "murder), etc.. then blast away with facts and the fact that one religion cannot reign over all. This makes me want to write my own paper on abortion just for the hell of it.

I'm homeschooled, and my mom is very open-minded, so I don't have to worry about limitations on writing papers. I'm trying to write my report from a neutral point of view, but I'll probably make it a paper about my views instead... I'll just have to see how it turns out.

That is one topic I definitely could not take a neutral stance on.

It's proven itself difficult for me... Aw, screw it! I have to write my point of view. Too bad I don't belong to a classroom where people can question me about it.
That brings up another point... No one ever wants to debate with me! I've tried numerous times to start up discussions about abortions with pro-lifers, but no one ever responds! And the people in the abortion debate in ED are just a tad above my debating level... Which is why I try so hard to put the ignorant pro-lifers in LI in their places... As well as people on other sites.
IT NEVER WORKS! gonk

that that dont kill me....can only make me stronger. Most of the classes in my school won't let you do papers on abortion because it's such a touchy subject.
We have a daycare in my school for the teenage moms, so they all come here to have their kids. A lot of the girls that frequent the daycare (Read: moms) have been known to throw fits and even burst out into tears at the mention of abortion.
So......yeah, It's not allowed. i need you to hurry up now. cause i can't wait much longer.

If you want someone to debate with, I could always try playing Devil's Advocate with you over PMs.

It's probably a bad idea to use ED or Gaia as a source. When I did my debate on abortion, I used the PCG's library of logic to find good links and sources, and to practice debating and see different techniques that both sides used, but I did'nt cite Gaia or people I knew as a source because that's not very official. Since my project was a debate for government class, I mostly focused on why abortion must remain legal, so my main points were about women's rights, bodily domain, separation of church and state, and the impracticality of abortion bans and restrictions. (ie: I asked them how they planned to punish the women, like this article in Newsweek later asked its readers: Quindlen: How Much Jail Time for Women Who Have Abortions? ) The two most helpful books, for me, were The War On Choice by Gloria Feldt, and Abortion: A Positive Decision by Patricia Luneborg. Legal Abortion: Arguments Pro and Con from Choicematters.org is probably the best short pro-choice guide to this debate. Facts On Induced Abortion In The United States is the page from the Guttmacher institute that I use most often for facts in online debate. More links: Planned ParenthoodPro-choice Education ProjectNational Abortion Federation (They have some ads in Ms. Magazine this month.) NARALNational Organization for WomenReproductive Health Reality CheckCenter For Reproductive RightsThis Post from Shakespeare's Sister, about why abortion rights should not be turned over to the states. The library of logic section of the PCG also has a ton of links. Avicia I wish my professors in college would have not ruled out abortion as a topic we could write on. They're probably sick of the "your a murderer!" sixth-grade writing level bullshit that lifers write.

I've got a debate class. As a matter of fact, we were to debate abortion earlier today. ...I missed it however, and unfortunatly, because I was asleep.

Katya_Stevens I've debated a bit and read 4k+ pages of posts on the abortion thread, so I'd like to think I have a general idea of what's going on xp Wow, over four thousand? I'm only in the two hundreds... (I have the bad urge to say something like, "It's over four thousaaaand," but that would be weird.) Katya_Stevens If you want someone to debate with, I could always try playing Devil's Advocate with you over PMs. Haha, cool. Though, it depends on what kind of person you'd be. Because, this one guy I've been reading debate, divineseraph or whatever, (namedrop!) really ticks me off. And then there are those random girls that drop in with "aborshun ish murder!!!!1one!! its killin a babie!!!1" That usually post and run and have nothing to back anything they say up... And the rest are either religious or men... Not to generalize, but that's what I've gathered. ...Yeah. smile

Can't remember what he wrote, but it kinda ticked me off, too (maybe I should go back and read the early pages, refresh my memory). As for how I'd debate, I'd hope I say stuff other than "if you can't afford a kid, keep your legs closed!", "abortion is murder" and the host of emotional tactics that are usually given smile

Just an idea for an intro; I start most of my arguments with how and why a legal system should be seperated from personal morality. That is, you don't vote on an issue based on "I like/don't like this" because it's not only you who is affected by the outcome, it is an entire country. Example: Should gay marriage become legal in all parts of my country, it should be the decision of the priest wheather or not to perform the ceremony. Although I highly disagree with them if they refuse, I also believe in seperation of Church and State.
