About The House of Ravenclaw

Our house is named for one of the four Hogwarts' co-founders, Rowena Ravenclaw. Rowena Ravenclaw is described by the Sorting hat as "Fair Ravenclaw, from glen," (GF12). According to the Lexicon, that is surmised to be probably somewhere in Scotland, such as Glencoe or perhaps the Great Glen where Loch Ness is. Rowena Ravenclaw's Famous Wizard card tells us that "It's thought that she came up with the ever-changing floor plan. She's best remembered for her intelligence and creativity."

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure" is an oft-repeated Ravenclaw proverb. [HP5, HP7]. Our animal is the eagle (not the raven as some think), and our colours are blue and bronze (though the movies portray our colors as blue and silver). It has been suggested that Ravenclaw refers to the "raven" colored (black) talons of an eagle, rather than the bird raven*. According to Jo Rowling, Ravenclaw corresponds to the element of air.

Note to all: The Ravenclaw eagle is an all-one-color bronze (a/k/a golden) eagle NOT the white headed (bald) American eagle). The bald eagle is native to North America and only found on that continent, one of the reasons it was chosen to represent the United States. So when you're designing a banner or entering a contest or quiz, please be sure that your Ravenclaw eagle doesn't have a white head and tail!

Our house ghost is the Grey Lady, who was revealed in book 7 to be Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. Helena was murdered by the Bloody Baron in a forest in Albania.

Head of Ravenclaw House in JKR's books is Professor Filius Flitwick, Charms teacher.

The Ravenclaw Common Room

The Ravenclaw common room and dormitories are located in Ravenclaw Tower on the west side of Hogwarts. The entrance is a door at the top of a tightly winding spiral staircase that leads up from the fifth floor. The wooden door has neither handle nor keyhole, but a talking bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle.

In order to gain entry to the Ravenclaw common room, a logical riddle must be solved, in contrast to the Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Slytherin common rooms, which require a password to enter. The riddles given in the book are philosophical in nature such as 'What came first, the phoenix or the flame?' and 'Where do vanished objects go?', the responses to which were, respectively, 'A circle has no beginning' answered by Luna Lovegood and 'Into nonbeing, that is to say everything', answered by Professor McGonagall.

The Ravenclaw common room is described as a wide, circular room, very airy, with graceful arched windows "punctuating" the walls, which are hung with blue and bronze silks. During the day there is a spectacular view of the surrounding mountains. The ceiling is a dome painted with stars, which are echoed in the midnight blue carpet. There are tables, chairs and bookcases, and in a niche opposite the door is a tall, life-sized white marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw wearing her diadem. [HP7pg 587]
