Well my little sis was a vegan for about six months and lost 17 lbs. just from that...

It depends on what you eat. If you're a vegan there's lots of unhealthy stuff you can't eat, so your calorie intake goes down, and voila! You lose weight!

Same basic thing for vegetarians. However, there's lots more unhealthy stuff which you can partake in. But cutting out red meat, fried chicken, and the like would lower your daily calorie intake, so you might lose weight. Unless you become a vegetarian and eat nothing but potato chips. Then you get no good nutrition and you gain weight.

Do you want to be a vegetarian for moral reasons, or simply for weight loss? If it's not for moral reasons, and you like fish, might I suggest being a pescatarian? That's the name for the silly "vegetarians" who eat fish- they aren't actual vegetarians, they're pescatarians. Fish is supposed to be super duper good for you xp .

(Note: I am far from an expert on weight loss. So don't trust what I say too much.)

If you do become a vegetarian or vegan, be sure to talk to your doctor about healthy ways to get your protein. Vegans, especially, need to really concentrate on getting protein from non-animal sources. Meat, fowl, fish, eggs, and non-fat dairy products are the most efficient sources of protein, but someone who doesn't eat any animal products can still get protein from a variety of sources.

And make sure that you vary your dietary intake. Don't just eat the same meal four or five times a week. One day have a salad with garbanzo beans (protein); the next day go for vegetarian chili; the next, a stir-fry with tofu. This way you won't get bored. You'll also learn a lot about cooking with different ingredients, and your dishes will become really exciting to eat instead of really dull for yourself and any guests you happen to cook for.

i'm vegie. it's not hard getting the right amount, or more than enough iron and protien, unless you cut out the following

tofu
nuts
vegies
oats/bran for brekkie

yeh, i eat a lot of them.

but i wouldn't do it to loose weight.

healthy omnivore= healthy weight
healthy vegetarian=healthy weight
healthy vegan = healthy weight

if the unhealthy foods you eat are exclusively meat, then you might loose.

My friend actually gained a lot of weight when she became a vegetarian, because she ate a lot more pasta/carb based foods.

You can lose weight if you switch over to vegetarian, but it is actually just as easy if not easier to gain weight as well. Like Spleen said, when my sister went vegetarian she gained about 20 pounds because she was like "well.. this pizza doesn't have meat on it.. this pasta doesn't either.. neither does this snicker's bar! rofl " and that was her diet until she discovered how wonderful Morning Star food is. x3
