Hehe. (:
So, today is the last day of marching band.
And what a week it has been.
Considering I'm a freshman and all. ^^;

Anyways, I play the baritone.
I've had it for one month (LOLwtf)
And before that, I played the oboe.
Eh, I think I'm allright at it.
But my arms are killing me. ]]:
Any tips on what workout I should do?
or any tricks I can do to make it less painful? xDD!

People are always yelling at our section because our instrument is always down, but that's because it hurts. D;
And I can't lift it any higher or else something will pop. o__o

Other than that, this week has been pretty amazing. :]
On the last day, we marched and played our first song, haha.
And then we played, and had a huge water/cheese/paint fight.

haha nice. i'm having the same problem. i play the trumpet, so it's not as hard for me, but my arms are so weak!
the best thing that you can do is a lot of push-ups and practice keeping your horn up. i know it hurts, but it's the best way to get arms the strength that they need.
by the time september comes around, it'll be a lot easier, trust me ^_^

A cheese fight? Oh my....
I have the same problem with my arms at the beginning of the season.
I use the plastic lyres that clamp to the end of the bell. I try to keep my lyre on my bell as long as allowed, loaded with music; if I can march well with the extra weight, I'll do great during the performance without it. Which is what it's all about.

I too march baritone.
I am going to college, but I am also in Drum Corp.

Heh. Suck it up is all I can say.

A good way to work out is this.

When you're at home just watching tv or sitting around. Get the baritone out and hold it up in playing position or in check *idk what you call it) position. Do it all the time and don't cheat.

Also, every day, hold it up for a certain amount of time three times a day.
I started at four minutes in the morning, in the afternoon and at night WITHOUT putting it down.
Then I moved up and up. Now I can hold it up for about 15 minutes.

Just gotta be a haus.

Icy Hot helps BUNCHES! But I promise that as long as you don't cheat your first week it'll get easier. Last week it hurt SO bad to hold up my horn but now it's pretty easy. But do not, I repeat, DO NOT arch your back cause it'll hurt.

@Star: Ohh, that's what I've been doing. :]
I think it's helping some, aha.
I hope it gets better though, because we only have one week of summer left. :/

@Liza: Yes. Senior prank.
It was pretty fun though.
What are lyres?
xDD

@Nylon: Me too.
I seriously thought I was gonna collapse from holding it up so long, lol.
And it's so hard for me to march, play, and count my steps all at the same time.
Ahh, and I'm in the front row at the end, which sometimes, I have to lead the line, which is crazy!
But it was kinda cool when we put it all together and I didn't really feel my arms hurting.
Thanks. ^^

@Radchad: Woahh, that's awesome. :]
Aha, I'll try doing that.
Soon, I'm such a procrastinator!
And I have to juggle that between summer reading papers and band.
But hopefully it'll work out.
What's a haus? o_o

@Spaz: Haha, I'll try to get that next time I go to Wally World. :]
And, I don't really cheat... THAT MUCH!
Lol, xDD, Ok, I confess.
But it's hard to get away with it, cause I'm at the end closest to all of the teachers and stuff at practice.
I've been working out and hopefully, I'll be able to do it.
We'll see tomorrow at practice.
I am so bad at arching my back.
And people always make fun of me because of it.
I hope that fixes itself too, lol.

I think everyone's arms tend to hurt once they start the season, your muscles aren't used to it.
Just keep practicing holding it up for certain amounts of time, and gradually it won't hurt you.
But if you let your horn sag all the time, you'll never build up the muscles in your arms, so keep it up there!

Mkay, our practice yesterday was interesting to say the least.
I could hold up my horn longer than usual, but it started to hurt.
And I did cheat a few times, but shh.
xDD
Anyways, our director said we had a crap rehearsal.
:/
And we still haven't fully played and march our first song, except twice.
Ohboyboyboy.

I don't know, I always thought Baritone's were heavier.

Do lots of push ups.

I had band practice today.
I could hold up my horn for much longer than last time.
I'm proud.
(:
Tomorrow is the first day of school.
Wish me luck!

I think I'm in the same boat :O.

We started marching Contra Bass's this year. I've march Sousa freshmen, Soph, and Junior Year and then now I have to march Contra.

Thing ways a ton, but I guess you just get used to it and build arm strength.

My drum tech just says... "Do more Pushups. You'll be 'Ight."

Argh...I forgot about the pain at band camp. DX

I march Trumpet(Woo!). I'm thankful we play all fast songs, though. ^^

Eh, I don't know what to say. Personally, I just get used to it.

i glad the only painful thing about marching with a flute is doing slides...

but heavy instrument people in our band do pushups.
