i love poetry too. Naomi Shihab Nye published two of my poems in the TEXAS OBSERVER this year. that rocked. biggrin but 500k. hell dude, if poetry cost money i'd never get anywhere with it. eek
here's a freebie, a kind of surrealist break-up poem (i can't get the spacing and the indentations to work right at all on this forum, sorry):
Time, was it you
who pulled every last kiss from my mouth, washed my face, dried it clean? Time, why aren’t we still kissing? It’s true; sometimes my brain is a chemical smear, memory stirred with a stick of years, but still I remember our afternoons blowing about like files from an exploded cabinet. While the class of nineteen- something began chaining themselves to their habits, we swooped in circles round a stopped watch drinking the sand from our glasses. Was there anything we couldn’t do, me and you? O Time, you’re hardly listening! It’s as if you’re in every country all at once, dillying and dancing. We had such nights! Every moonlight the perfect size, a half-full wallet in my back pocket ticking like a charm. We wandered arm in arm, link to link, and sigh to thigh. So when did I fall behind? Or did you run? Today I’m the broker whose own wristwatch chokes the blood from my hand. Even the quarter-hours are leaping at my legs, full of sturm and drang, demanding that I tickle them. Are these our offspring? Our unwound passion? Well, this isn’t the fatherhood that I imagined. Couldn’t we at least have had children? I remember as a boy I enjoyed reaching down to lift the heavy brass of an afternoon, hold it to these lips, lick the woody reed and blow, and so within a breath gasp a music that explodes — O Time, when are you coming home?
