Next week I'll be assisting in a summer camp program for 12-16 year olds. The class I'm working in is 'CSI: Forensic Detectives'. This is the first year for the instructor (who is amusingly enough named Nick. He was a CSI for 3 years and a cop for 4) and he hasn't exactly planned everything out.

I was wondering if you gus had any ideas for things we could do in the class. Expiraments. Discussions. Whatever. It's a week long course and I'm sure messy fingerprint powder and shoeprint casting will be involved. They also do an awesome crime scene set-up on the last day, so... yeah, just need some fillers that will keep the kids interested.

Any help appreciated.

Wow, that sounds like a really cool! You're so lucky! biggrin I haven't done anything like that since my sophomore year when I did the CSI event for the Science Olympiad competition.
I have a few ideas dealing with evidence examination:

Flame Tests
Foot to Height
Ink Chromatography Lab
Handwritting Analysis
Powder Analysis
Teeth Impressions
Urine Analysis
This might be a little iffy. I mean you can always make the urine from .9 g NaCl to every 100 ml distilled water you use.

You could always do something with crime scene photography.

Yeah, last year when I took the class we did Fingerprinting stuff, blood spatter tests, trace analysis, shoeprint casting, handwriting analysis and the big crime scene at the end.

This guy's less hands on, last week he only did fingerprint and shoeprint stuff, but he had a big long rant about ballistics and had each student do a 3-5 minute report on something to do with forensics (which all but mine ended up being about serial killers -_-) But his crime scene PWNED. Lol.

I'm attempting to convince him to knock down the powerpoint slides a bit. xD He ---loves--- his poerpoint presentations.

Oh boy do I know how that is! My Animal Biology teacher in high school loved to compliment all his lessons with a whole mess of slides.

If he won't ease off on the powerpoints maybe try and convince him to at least make them more interesting? It'd be a shame for the kids to get bored stiff and then have to do a big crime scene investigation. 3nodding

Heh, what was his set up like? For the crime scene, I mean

My brother and I were actually in the class, but Nick more or less adopted us as assistants, so we didn't actually get to process it. We did get to set it up, though.

We brought in 2 mannequins from the medical building, one adult one kid, and damn did that look odd carrrying them across campus. xD

Ugh, he decided to set it up in the mens bathroom -which got me more weird looks.

We used fake blood (we found out later that it stains) to make it look like the kid was shot, he taped the kid up with scotch tape, because he lost the scissors he was going to cut teh rope with and we hung the adult from a bathroom stall. And put crime scene tape up, of course.

We scared several people out of using the bathroom during set up. xDDD

He turned out the lights and gave the kids flashlights. They had to treat it like a real scene and tell him what they would do to collect teh evidence and how they'd process it and all. It was cool.
