I've recently decided to try and start a discussion about spiritual gifts because I think it is a great topic. I also haven't seen a topic about it as of yet. I just kind of want to know what y'all believe to be spiritual gifts and what you don't.

Spiritual gifts, that's a good topic to look at. (Also one I want to do a lot more Bible study on).
1. I definitely believe they are for today just as much as they were for the church in Acts

I am worried though that people are not being careful about making sure they are following a completely Biblical view of the spiritual gifts.

For example I was raised to believe that speaking in tongues is the "initial physical evidence" of being filled with the Holy Spirit, but I don't remember the Bible saying that's how it is. Of course the Holy Spirit showed up in that manner and with the tongues of fire over people's heads that first time, but I haven't seen a verse saying that it starts with tongues for every individual.

I'll come back to this thread with some Bible verses and such. It will be fun to really look at this topic!

I was taught that speaking in tongues was only okay when someone is there to translate it so that everyone knows what is being said.

I also think about spiritual gifts a lot. So, I think some things can be spiritual gifts if used to praise/worship God or for evangelical purposes. Things that not many people would agree with.

Yeah, and I think that's closer to what I believe now. Though I have seen other verses that indicate other uses of tongues. Either way, Paul talks about seeking the other gifts instead of concentrating on tongues.

It looks like 1 Corinthians 12 and 14 are good chapters to study on the subject.

Wow, I just found a verse that made something clearer. I'm going to look into it some more.

I believe that the spiritual gifts were only for the first century church. Anyone today claiming to have a gift is full of...well...yeah. Gifts could only be given by an apostle. He had to lay his hands upon a person to impart the gifts to them. (I hope that makes sense). Anyways, the apostles are obviously no longer living. Therefore, how could anyone today have any gifts?? Also, the gifts were meant to enhance the message BEFORE the bible was completed. Now that we have the full bible, there is no need for the gifts. If anyone wants to see God's wonder and glory, go to his word, not someone doing magic tricks. And another thing. The gift of tongues in the bible is not what's being taught today. In the bible, it was to help the preacher/teacher give his sermon to people whose language he did not speak or understand. He did not need a translator to tell his message. Never in the bible was the gift of tongues used to pray to God or to communicate with him (and if you say it was, give me a book, chapter, and verse). So, all in all, no, I do not believe that anyone today has any spiritual gifts. I have no biblical reason to.

I believe that God can give gifts, not just apostles. Which means that we can still have spiritual gifts. He may give them to people so that more can believe in his powers. What would the point of only giving people gifts in the first century instead of giving people all through out time gifts? It would actually probably be more important now than in the first century.

Apparently I carry gifts of discernment, empathy, speaking & singing in tongues, wisdom pictures and words, and other less used gifts. The only 2 I never seem to stop using, with or without realising, are Empathy and discernment.

I know there are still spiritual gifts, I only have to walk in to my church 10/15 minutes late and it's obvious.

I don't feel it's neccesary for the tongues to be translated; after all, it's the persons prayer and worship to God, it isn't neccesary for us to know what they're saying.

Paul did mention speaking in other tongues without an interpretation, but he also said that you should ask God for the interpretation, because it is edifying and can end up helping others. So the best I can tell from scriptures is that an interpretation is not needed, but is the best result and the one to ask for.

That all really makes since. I believe that I have the gifts of empathy and few others but I'm not certain which ones. Sometimes I like to think that my photographic memory and open-mindedness are also gifts but I've never heard of those. I've also been told that I have a gift with children.

yeah, it think there are different types of gifts. there are the "spiritual" gifts in terms of holy spirit type, then there are the gifts of the talent type. the talents he gives us to help us do good things for him and for other people.

I got creativity and a heck of a lot of mercy (mostly because I need a lot of mercy myself, so I see why others need it).
It's so cool how God gives us different gifts to help us do what he wants!
He makes us so different so that everybody isn't trying to do the same job.

But in the end aren't we all doing the same thing; evangelism, praising God, etc.; just in different ways?

yup.

I definately believe in spiritual gifts. mistressofthelost, I don't think the gift-giving stopped with the apostles at all, for this simple reason, THE CHURCH IS STILL BEING ESTABLISHED. We sure as heck haven't reached the whole world yet, we still have so many people, near and far, who have not heard the good news.

Besides that fact, God works through us EVERYDAY. Even if a person has come to God, that's all the more reason satan will come after his children, we still have to use our gifts to praise God and in the meantime defend ourselves and others from attacks. I myself have had a gift of Empathy since a VERY young age. This is my most dominant gift. But I don't treat it any differently than my gifts in art or music. No matter what gifts you have, you should praise God with them!

I know there has got to be at least one new person in the guild that might have something interesting to say about this but is too lazy to look through the past topics. I'm just trying to put this thread back out there for people to see. I would very much like to see what y'all have to say.
