Hey there. Uh....Our school has tried marching before, and we seem to have trouble controlling our breathing while marching. It is much harder than I realze to control your air. Is there some trick to breathing and marching, or is it a matter of strength? Both? Can anyone help me out?

I've had breathing problems in the past, but most of those were at the begining of the season's when your summer just ended or whatever and your not in shape.

Most of the time it is endurance. When you move at a marching pace you use alot of air and then playing as well, it can be difficult. Over time it should go away.

Adding to the endurance comment, another thing to think about is pacing. It's funny, because breathing seems so simple that you wouldn't have to think about it, but among everything else that you have to concentrate on while you're marching, it's easy to forget about it until you absolutely need it. Plan with your music where you can take breaths so that you don't reach a sustained note with no air left. Add breath marks to your music and plan with your section to stagger breathing so that you don't break phrases as a section. You have to breath often because you're exerting more energy, obviously. There's a bit more than can be said, I suppose, but that covers everything that comes to mind quickly. I hope it helped a bit.

BREATHING IS FOR SISSIES. scream

...no. Really, it's what everyone else was saying about endurance. Marching is about going all five or eight or whatever minutes of your show, not running to the end of the football field. Practice, get plenty of exercise outside of band, and above all: relax.

at my school we do breathing exersises everyday. one of the best ones is called the horrer exersise. you breath in for one count then out, and get faster everytime. its hard to keep going since you get dizzey pretty quick, but it really helps

There are breathing exercises to do to strengthen your lungs. Breathing from the stomach is important aswell.

Take large breathes, dont waiste time, if there are nice periods of time or some rests catch your breathe and before you play your first note take a big breath.

Do LOTS of breathing exercises.
Seriously. Lots.

Keep your stomach firm and suck in a much air as possible.

Our director does this breathing exercise where we start out breathing in for 4 then out for 4, in 4 out 8, in 2 out 16, in 2 out 24, in 1 out 32.
DD:
We get REALLY light headed but all that works shows in the long run when we're out practicing and such.

Also he keeps us in top top shape. Seriously. We're expected to run 2 miles on the track before practice so we learnt o pace ourselves.

I guess most of it is just endurance, and lung capacity.
As for Lung Capacity you can work to expand your lungs over time.

besides everything said above you have to control how much air goes in to playing and distribute it evenly through every note also when marching you have to learn to keep your upper body straight at all times (except when doing visuals) also make sure you do not bounce and roll your feet when marching if not it will screw up your playing and waste your air faster as well.

I play on drumline soooooo, I really breath when ever I want

Just take in full, deep breaths and don't tense up when you play. I had a hard time breathing (still do on some of the higher features and all that) and a friend suggested making sure you push out excess air when you can. You might try it? Not sure.

To improve your breathing as a band you can do a breathing block. Have the woodwinds, brass, and drumline/guard form three different blocks at a one step interval and set a met to sayy.. 160. You then have all the blocks jog around the field, with the goal being keeping your feet together. More importantly, you have to all breathe together. In for 4 out for 4, in for 8 out for 4, in for 12 out for 4, etc etc. It's a pain in the a** BUT it really helps.

There's no trick to breathing while marching. It's exactly the same as breathing while walking. You can do that, right?
Anyway. I find that there's no real challenge to it... I've also been doing it for a few years now...
When I was actually playing.
Once I became DM, I stopped worrying about it. I can breathe whenever I want... whenever I'm not doing my flourishes. Meh. Whatever.

i don't know how to do it but there is a thing called circle breathing which people say is easy also if you play a brass instrument take your mouth piece take a samll peice of paper (business cards work pretty well) and put it against a smooth surface then take a deep breath and blow on the card though your mouth peice if you do it right your breath should hold the card up hold it up as long as you can then reapeat and repeat good way for holding long notes as well

When I first started marching, I found I had to find more places to breathe in, of course, but I also had to breathe out on occasion. I found a lot of the oxygen in my lungs was used before I could exhale. I can't comment much on the endurance thing, though. It's been two years since I marched and I can't really recall how I managed that first year. (go drum majors!)

Ever heard of the word running? yeah running everyday will also increase you lung capacity as well. If you can, then do any breathing exercises before after and even during running. just a faster way.

take quick, full, DEEP, breaths.
Imagine you have a balloon inside you that you are trying inflate. Breath into your stomach and back, not your shoulders.
