Vlad Ţepeş. The third Vlad in his family, famous for his exceedingly cruel punishments. Almost like he thirsted for blood. He was nicknamed Vlad the Impaler for these punishments, but Western Europeans took a look at Bram Stoker's work and gave him the nickname we associate with vampires to this day ... Dracula.
In the 1980s and 1990s, KONAMI picked up on the Dracula mythos by creating the Belmont family. In Bloodlines, the writers picked up on the character Quincey Morris from the original story by Bram Stoker, giving that slayer a son named John. However, he wasn't the only other slayer.
KONAMI borrowed from the 1943 film "Son of Dracula", creating a character named Alucard; he would either be featured as an ally, the main character of the game, or a boss. According to the time-line, Alucard was abandoned by his father for reasons of siding with humanity. Repeatedly throughout the Castlevania time-line, Alucard helps the Belmont character of the game (or, in the case of the Sorrow Series, Cruz) destroy the cause of the dark forces gathering as well as the Dark Lord.
One thing to note - Alucard always carried a sword that looked like a cutlass.

Quote:
Alucard's weapon of choice is the sword, and traditionally he wields a signature heirloom known simply as the "Alucard sword."
In Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse, Alucard states that, though he killed his father in order to save humanity, he feels guilty of patricide.
And now we have Vladimir Von Helson and his daughters coming back as vampires ... and one Louie Von Helson, carrying a cutlass.
Forgive me for saying this, but i am utterly thankful Konami won't sue because i believe the plot-line for H2k7 will be JUST that ... Louie helping Edmund and the others defeat Vladimir and the daughters ... albeit not liking that he has to.
No word on the likelihood of Ian being the alter ego of Louie (not likely, imo).
