If it feels right. "...What should I do if it does not feel right?" He swallowed hard, sighing. "Peace and serenity sound like very nice things. But nothing makes sense. Why does the room go black? Why do the stars only appear at night? Why can't I live under the sea where I'd like to be?"
He felt as though he were rejecting her which distressed him. What if she grew angry? "...Forgive me. Trees are nice, but I like the ocean more. I do not know why...."

Damaris was lucky that Cybele had appeared and not some other, more impatient and fickle goddess. She vaguely wondered how she should word the question for him so he would finally tell her what he wished. "If peace and serenity sound like nice things, then this is probably the right path for you. The room went black because it had to. Stars only appear at night because that is when Duniya's suns do not interfere. You can't live under the sea because you can't breathe under the sea in this current state."
Shakuni rubbed her temples. It was hard to tell if she was doing it because the goddess was annoyed or if she was personally becoming a bit agitated. "Damaris, I ask you again, what do you want in life?" Maybe this time he would answer the question properly.

He supposed that it didn't work unless he explicitly told her what he wanted. Actually, that made a lot of sense. In a way, he liked that because at least the goddess seemed to think like him. "I want to understand the world. And I want to breathe in the sea so I can live there." He hoped that he had been clear enough with that.

That was what she wanted to hear all along! Eureka, he understood. Cybele seemed to become significantly happier when Damaris finally told her what he had wanted all along. "You wish to know more about the world, do you?" The white light flared, forming a key. This key was silver. The key had an intricate design that might have reminded someone of an old-time skeleton key. The light dulled and disappeared as it created this bright key.
Deciding that he would probably need direction, Cybele directed Shakuni to point directly at the key. "Take the key, Damaris." Once he decided to, Shakuni would drop her hand and the white light would flare up once again.

It was probably one of the most beautiful things that he had seen yet. Eyes shining, he grasped the key tightly and pulled it close. For the moment, he seemed placated. It was unusual that a god gave something to someone. If anything, it seemed proper to give something in return. The next time he visited the temple, he could bring her a gift as thanks. After all, it was the proper thing to do. If someone gives you something, it's only right to give them something in return when the opportunity arises. It was just being polite.
Where should he stow this? He considered putting it in his pocket, but it might fall out there. The worst thing one could do is lose a gift moments after receiving it. That meant that the person utterly lacked decorum. Either that or they were just dense.
"Thank you," he said, his voice a little deeper this time as he was finally starting to relax. "...I assume that there is no key for breathing underneath the water." Maybe he could find another way to do that, one day.

"That is correct, my child." Shakuni nodded to show the avatar's agreement. "You shall have to find out how to do that on your own." The goddess began to fade. "For now, adieu! Use your gift wisely, young one." When the avatar had totally vanished, the figurative switch that had turned the sun off flicked back on and day faded back into existence. Shakuni floated down, no longer taken by Cybele. The lights about the fountain disappeared, leaving it empty and useless once again. The beautiful key stayed right where Damaris left it, though: in his hand.
Shakuni shook her head before standing up, brushing herself off. That was a bit longer than usual. How long had Damaris evaded answering the Earth Mother's true question? No matter, at least it was over now. "Are you contented now?" Hopefully, she would not be bombarded with another waterfall of questions. Shakuni did not wish to fall under the water today, beaten down by incessant questions about things she had already clarified for the confused, pathetic manifestation.

He was still staring at the key when she floated back down. Her voice came suddenly, and he jerked to attention. He managed a small half-smile, nodding. "I think so," he said, the true quality of his voice now present. His voice was deep and hollow now instead of being high and reedy. "Thank you...I hope that I was not a bother." He didn't want to inconvenience her too much because she must've had better things to do.

Finally, he was calm. It was best for all of them that way. "I am glad to hear that you are." He sounded a bit different now that wasn't panicking too. Shakuni was thankful for that. He would no longer bombard her with questions if he was calm, and she could finally take a breath of fresh air without being interrupted. "You were not a bother." Though he was a bit of a bother, Shakuni had been expecting him to come. At least it was over now, and at least she had to deal with his bumbling no longer.
"If you wish, you are now allowed to leave. There is nothing more to do here. Take the key with you, of course." Indeed, now that it was over, he could just leave. Once he left, there was no chance of him bothering her for at least a small while. Shakuni would take comfort in that. Hopefully, if they ever crossed paths again, Damaris was calmer and wiser.

"Right...." He wondered what he should do if he had anymore questions. The key could help him find out those questions, so perhaps he shouldn't ask her about that. But the key couldn't help that was when he would ask her. Sounded like a smashing plan to him. It made perfect sense.
"Thank you," he repeated. Bowing to her, he walked toward the exit. He still bumbled along like he was walking on a ship, but at least this time he seemed a tad quicker about catching himself. Maybe the exaggeration had simply been his nerves. Time would tell.
