Nara sighed as she walked up the cracked sidewalk to the small, old house. She was starting to get tired of this. It was always the same thing. Knock on some stranger's door, try and convince them to let her see the scroll, unseal the child within, then bribe the person to keep the kid. Well, more like threaten, now that she'd seen what had happened to Nate, the poor kid.

Her mysterious partner tagged along as the relic reached the front door and knocked, not finding a doorbell right away. She wouldn't be surprised if this creaking old thing didn't even have one.

The whiiir of a power tool suddenly cut off as Mort listened intently. The pudgy man placed the hand saw down and pushed his goggles up into his red hair. Was that.. the door? Frowning to himself he hurried out to the front room, brushing sawdust as he went. Not to self. Wire in a doorbell.

"Hello?" the man asked, as he opened the door. Frankly he was surprised that there were actually people there and it wasn't just his hearing going. "Can I.. help you?"

Nara flashed a smile at the man, quickly going into her speech. "Hello. I know this probably sounds a bit strange, but do you have an old scroll? One that you found or bought somewhere?" She could sense a scroll nearby and it was starting to drive her up the wall a touch.

Mort blinked, "Er yes...." the man stated slowly. "Who are you? This isn't one of those... magic... things, is it? Because if it is you can have the scroll." He began to babble, even after years on Gaia magic still made him uneasy. Of course that might have to do with the complete lack of it in him.

Stepping back a few paces, Mort gestured the two in.

Nara winced a bit. "Uh, not really..." She stepped inside as the man gestured for her and her partner to enter, the cloaked figure sweeping in behind the relic. "Could... could I take a look at it? We're looking for specific scrolls, see, and we want to make sure it's the right kind."

The reply stopped him cold and Mort took a moment to blink. "Uh....kay....." He was pretty sure he heard a bit of hesitance in the woman's voice but maybe it was just leftover buzzing from the saw.

"Er.. Just wait right here.." Mort said uneasily. Slipping, as well as possible, through the hallways he began to hunt for where he had placed that scroll. It was..just...over.. A loud thud echoed through the old house. "I'm okay.." came the faint call.

Quickly grabbing up the scroll from it's keeping place, Mort carefully threaded his way back through the beams of 2x4's and bags of miscellenious items.

Handing the scroll to Nara he said gruffly (to hide his ungraceful fall), "This it?"

Nara glanced about the house as she waited for Mort to return, jumping at the loud thud. As the man returned and offered her the scroll, her palms started to itch like crazy. "Yes." She said, sounding a bit breathless as she tried to hold in this feeling. "Yes... Could you unroll it for me?"

Her partner started to slip into his place, making the triangle as they waited for the man to break the seal and open the scroll.

Slowly the man broke open the seal on scroll, a seal he had painstakingly replaced after his first glance at it. Unconsciously he stepped into place as it slipped out of his hands, dropping to the floor.

The now familiar green fog started to form as the man opened the scroll. It swept itself around the triangle of adults. A small sound could be heard coming from within the center and the fog started to dissipate as Nara fell to her knees in exhaustion. Every time, every time...

Her partner made his way over to the relic to help steady her. Nara eyed the small boy that had appeared from the scroll. "He'll need a home. Here. I don't know why... but he's bonded to you. All of the scroll children are. If you abandon him, he'll die." Nara managed to get that explanation out, then took a deep breath.

"So... what are you going to name him?"

Nara's speech was lost on the unconscious form of Mort. The moment the green mist let him, the man fell over passed out in shock.

Slowly Mortimer opened his eyes to the ceiling. "You know," he addressed the cracked plaster, "I dreamt a crazy lady came in and dissolved into green mist." Sitting up gingerly he rubbed the back of his head where it had hit the floor. Letting out a moan he focused on the kid in front of him, and squeaked.

Nara frowned, unfortunately having to repeat what she'd said earlier. At least he hadn't seen her bit of weakness. "You weren't dreaming, but you probably already figured that out." She gestured towards the child. "He'll need to stay here. I don't know why, but he's bonded to you. They all are. If you abandon him, he'll die." A slightly condensed version of what she'd said earlier.

"What are you going to name him?"

Mort let out another squeak, this one more paniced than the last. "But!," the man protested childishly, "I don't know anything about raising kids! And, green light... and..." He clamped his mouth shut looking at both of them while he thought about what the woman had said. Something stood out and his face sobered up.

"He'll die?," He asked, just to make sure.

Nara nodded somberly. "Yes. He's connected to you. If that connection is broke... well, he won't live for long after that." The relic stood, handing the man a business card. "Call us if anything... strange happens."

With that, the woman and man headed towards the front door to let themselves out and back home.

Mort stared sadly at the door before turning and grabbing something. Gently he poked at the kid. Who giggled. With a wimper he hurried to his phone. Maybe someone he knew had kids. They'd know what to do...
