No no, i think it's a perfectly normal town, they just chose that particular town for the map...
Yeah. Supposedly the creators are Stephen King fans or some such s**t, and a lot of Stephen King's books/stories/etc take place in Maine, so that's where it's supposed to be, or so i've heard. West Virginia was a tid bit dumb... But eh, whatcha gonna do?

Not the history or anything, but the look of the town, with the fog and such.
And... isn't Toluca Lake an actual lake in California?
Planet's Funniest Animals asks you to send videotapes to Toluca Lake in California.
That creeped me out.

I think Silent Hill from the movie was based off Centralia.
Centralia was wiped out by coal fires and the fires will burn underneath that town until 3000. It is also very foggy, and sometimes ashes fall from the sky.
But you could be right about Centralia being the basis of the video game Silent Hill as well.
... where there is a danger of them coming true?

I've watched my little brother play. It scares me too much. The movie gave me the heebie-jeebies in the theater, and the games are just too much.

Played Silent Hill 1 through, and would've played 2, but my mother took it away from me and was like "No" and so I gave it away. >.<

My PS2 hates my SH2 disk. Every time I get to the cutscene in the otherworld hospital when I find Maria again, she freezes with this ">8DDDDDD" epression on her face.
