Do you think that this will really have any effect on our lives?
It will have an impact on people being surrounded by a Cathlic population
It won't really effect our lives, it will just hurt the subconsious realtionship
Not really, I mean no body really takes it seriously anyways
No effect at all, it's just a bunch of hype and people, not saying any names (Yvette) are just freaking out over nothing
  Eh Don't really care
Eh I care, but I'm not jewish
T_T my parents starve me of gold so you have to give me some T_T

I'm pretty sure our aim here isn't to badmouth other religions, however much we may disagree with their basic tenets or premises.

However, if one does think that the religion is crazy, I say, let the craziness come out so that its members can look it dead in the eye and ask themselves if they're really committed to it.

I know lots of Catholics who did just that. It's kind of depressing, really. I mean, at least Judaism has had a movement here and there to adapt to the times, and addresses things like evolution. Whereas the Church is like "that's what it says in the Bible. Grumble." Though I'm given to understand that if you don't practice the religion the way a Catholic does, then you're not a Catholic? I think someone told me once that's why they're so loathe to reform. Well, not a whole heck of a lot of reform, but the biggest changes that I can think of in the Church were predicated on other huge events. (like the Reformation.)

Anyway, I don't want to look like I'm attacking the Church or anything. I do feel that it did some things that it shouldn't have in the past... but I'd also like to see that it learns from its mistakes.

Anyway, I'm not a Catholic, so I guess it doesn't really matter what I think. sweatdrop

Oh, and to Divash and Cindy: I assumed that they do have translations to go with the latin prayer, but since I've never sat through a latin mass, I wasn't 100 per cent sure.

It appears that we've all forgotten one important part: the service is in latin.

I think most of the "never again" theroists are having bad memories of what happens when a German guy addresses a crowd of 200,000 people and starts talking about "doing it like they did back in the old days."

I think there's very little to worry about in that regard.

I think he was sort of pandering to those radical Catholic groups who refuse to recognize popes like John Paul II. Lots of churches stopped recognizing the Papacy after the reforms in the 70's.

Tell me if I'm wrong though. This was explained to me a while ago by my ex-roommate

I dunno if that's right. Last anti-pope died in the mid 15th century. And traditionalist catholics broke off from Rome back during Vatican II in the 1960s.

The only thing I know of in the 1970s as reforms by the Roman Catholic Church was the ARCIC. Which was to mend the fence between The Catholics and the Anglicans.

Even today you can find Anti-popes (they dont call themselves that but they are by the traditional meaning of the remark "Anti-pope")

Some 'Catholics' think the last four are anit-Popes.
Can't please everyone.
And you've got to love the Killer Rabbit.

The Tridentine Mass is the old rite Mass (as opposed to the new Norvus Ordo rite), and can be said in Latin or a vanacular language. It's often practised because the way the liturgy is worded is seen as giving greater referance to G-d. The prayer in question is remains, unedited, in the Tridentine Missal, for the Good Friday Mass. It was edited in the 1970s in the new rite, but it's still offensive, because it's still suggesting Jews need mercy more than Catholics. Which in reality, contradicts completely Catholic doctrine, so it sucks anyway.

However, the Good Friday Mass is not allowed to be said in the Tridentine rite, unless it is a private Mass; it cannot be openly advertised as a Parish Mass, and often you will have to bring your own translation. In practicality, many Priests are too busy during that period to organise two Masses on Good Friday, as they have many Confessions and visits to do around that time. So the old version of the prayer isn't really in common use at all, and I won't include it, because it's not very pleasant.

The prayer in the new rite may be subject to removal, but the process will take a while, because the Vatican is a huge beauocracy. This is the 1970 version of said prayer:

Quote:
Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the Word of G-d, that they may continue to grow in the Love of His Name and in faithfulness to His Covenant.
(Silent smile Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity. Listen to your Church as we pray that the people You first made Your Own may arrive at the fullness of redemption.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Really, it's way more friendly, but in principle, it's saying the same thing. Catholics just need to be more aware of this, and when the Vatican is swamped in letters from angry old Catholics it may bother to do something. Which sometimes does happen.

I think the Church will continue to damage its relations with most groups of people if it doesn't get a grip and loose the old dudes. For the record, I wanted Arinze. But BXVI has his benefits, too, and the old rite could, otherwise, do a lot of good in the Church, in terms of respect for G-d and humility. But no Catholic can have those graces until they understand the necessity of respect for others. In the last few years, the Vatican may as well have closed it's doors to glbt people completely.

I honestly believe the Vatican will work on this prayer, though. I have a feeling they like Jews more than most other people.
